View Full Version : Left 4 Dead demo up eatenbacktolife 11-11-08, 11:42 AM Just a heads up for those interested... mikeloxlong 11-11-08, 12:23 PM for those who want to "take a look before downloading" or just plain want to get hyped up about it...I can see it's potential for a good game here (http://www.g4tv.com/trailers/videos/34798/Left_4_DirectFeed_Gameplay_Footage_Xbox_360.html) dlconner 11-11-08, 12:30 PM Can't wait to download this demo tonight. Unfortunately, I will have to wait until Christmas for the full version, as my darn brother told our mom to get us both a copy for Christmas. Apparently his wife said he can't buy another game for a while, so now I suffer ! LOL Sardaan 11-11-08, 12:31 PM Already downloading...as a matter of fact it should be done. Now I have to wait until I get off work and put my kids to bed. Don't think this one is a family friendly game :-) bdoyledimou 11-11-08, 12:40 PM the benefits of working from home.. (you all should try it :) downloading now, and at 14%.... looking forward to this one.. hope its not a let down.. mproper 11-11-08, 12:44 PM I have almost zero interest in this game given all the other great games I don't have time for, but I'm going to give the demo a chance anyways to see if it changes my mind at all. Scott Simonian 11-11-08, 12:56 PM Ah, sweet! Thanks for the heads up on this. I will start the download when I get home. Been waiting on this one for a couple years now. Hope it turns out well. bdoyledimou 11-11-08, 01:59 PM Just completed a 4 player online campaign... and man it is actually pretty fun. Random hordes, lots of action, teamwork required. Even if i wasn't going to buy it just to add to my Zombie game collection, i would buy it cause it seems to be pretty cool. Framerates are fluid no pop up (but its confined spaces) plenty of gore.. the opening cinematic is pretty cool too.. eatenbacktolife 11-11-08, 02:01 PM I only played the single player mode, as I'll wait until tonight when people on my friends list have dl'd it before trying co-op. Single player is only ok, not much "meat" there for gamers who prefer playing by themselves. Being swarmed is pretty cool, and I can see how doing this with 4 other people would be pretty cool. Pipe bombs are awesome, as all the zombies will pile on them due to the noise they make, and you can figure out the rest... RobertR1 11-11-08, 02:03 PM If you enjoyed horde more in Gears, this is an auto buy. The demo is downright mean! It ends too fast :( This is a 4 player co op for sure. I can't imagine it being fun solo. dlconner 11-11-08, 02:33 PM If you enjoyed horde more in Gears, this is an auto buy. The demo is downright mean! It ends too fast :( This is a 4 player co op for sure. I can't imagine it being fun solo. I hear if you max out the difficulty it is pretty brutal on the demo, and a ton of fun for teams. Hopefully I can download it this evening while getting the kids ready for bed, and give it a run some time this week...Gah just to many good games to play! lunaticpuma 11-11-08, 02:37 PM I've had the demo since Saturday. It's an awesome game. I played nearly 4 hours of co-op with one other person on expert. It's insanely fun and challenging at the same time. Expert is the only way to play. modiGTI 11-11-08, 03:41 PM This is a must buy for me. I had 3 of my buddies on last week, and we had a blast with the hardest difficulty. RunningRiot 11-12-08, 06:28 PM Been playing it. I do believe this will be my CoD4 this year. That is to say it will be the multiplayer experience I'm hooked on like crack for 2009. vancouver 11-12-08, 06:59 PM Holly dated graphics Batman! I'm 90% sure this a day one buy. assasyn 11-12-08, 07:11 PM Holly dated graphics Batman! MP looks fun thou That's what I though. How great would this game be with the COD4 engine? RTRic 11-12-08, 09:37 PM I actually like concept of this game. It is much more than just shooting zombies. You actually have to help each other. Although I am not liking the fact that you have to play the demo as the chick. Blah! lol assasyn 11-12-08, 09:39 PM I actually like concept of this game. It is much more than just shooting zombies. You actually have to help each other. Although I am not liking the fact that you have to play the demo as the chick. Blah! lol Play it again. It's random character selection. RunningRiot 11-12-08, 11:32 PM Holly dated graphics Batman! MP looks fun thou The Source engine may be a little dated but it would be impossible to get this game locked at 60fps with that many enemies on screen, all with their own AI, with the action moving that fast on this hardware with something like the Unreal 3 or CoD4 engines. WilliamR 11-13-08, 07:43 AM Okay, what I didn't like was the graphics. Really hurts the game in my opinion. Almost like an original xbox game, just a little better. The zombie AI seems off. I come into a room and they are wandering around, one is standing on a couch and one is walking into a picture. Nothing seems to happen until you break that magical line that triggers the next sequence and causes them to charge you. Not sure I am going to buy this now. Swift Mojo Hand 11-13-08, 08:13 AM Play it again. It's random character selection. In the options menu you can select your perfered character. Bill all the way! I really enjoyed it. The lighting effects where what got me, they where impressive. As for the zombies being a little stupid and walking slow then crossing that "magic line" is exciting because you walk into a room and think it is clear untill you shine your light on one that is only 2 feet away. Creepy  ! JohnnyPraze 11-13-08, 08:14 AM The zombie AI seems off. I come into a room and they are wandering around, one is standing on a couch and one is walking into a picture. Nothing seems to happen until you break that magical line that triggers the next sequence and causes them to charge you. I disagree with you here to an extent. I mean, that's what zombies do. I agree with everone else about the graphics. They do look dated. I have to say the sound (5.1 esp.) of the zombies and ambiance is pretty good. Intimidating at times. However, the guns sound terrible, and the voice acting is so-so. This game could have been really good, however, it's just okay in my opinion... I'm still waiting for a good zombie game. This one was very close in many aspects. (They need to lose the huge monster zombies.) Developers need to make a "real" zombie survival game. Where getting across the street is actually a task, and not scripted. Where you can actually decide where you want to go... (The rooftop of that old creepy house, or head for the pickup truck down the street, etc...) I love the ability to board up windows/doors on COD WaW. It would also be cool if in co-op they didn't start you together. (In almost every zombie movie, strangers are thrown together at some point.) It would be cool to actually hear/see the gunfire, and go to it, to find a "friendly". Custumizable characters would be great to. (everyone wants to star in their own zombie movie right???) I'm from zombie headquarters (south western PA) so, maybe this is just me... cesslinger 11-13-08, 08:21 AM I downloaded the demo on PC and the ole' box. My PC doesn't meet the min requirements for the processor; although the other components are double the minimum, the game chugs when all of the effects are turned off and there are more than 15 or so zombies on the screen. The rez was also the lowest available for 16:10 aspect ratio. Needless to say, the xbox version looks great... to me. Day 1 purchase here. chrisherbert 11-13-08, 08:22 AM I think the graphics are pretty good. Definitely an improvement over Half Life 2. perpetual 11-13-08, 08:43 AM Is this games coop for the mission or is it like horde mode in gow2? dlconner 11-13-08, 09:10 AM Is this games coop for the mission or is it like horde mode in gow2? The mission. Degenerazn 11-13-08, 12:40 PM Any word on whether this game will have split screen co op? Having all 4 playing on 1 screen with be pretty awesome. jhoff80 11-13-08, 12:54 PM Any word on whether this game will have split screen co op? Having all 4 playing on 1 screen with be pretty awesome. I know you can at least have two person split screen. I don't know about four person. RunningRiot 11-13-08, 01:15 PM You guys complaining about everything being scripted clearly don't know what you're talking about. Play through it a few more times. It's different every time. The zombies spawn somewhere different every time. You get swarmed in different locations everytime. The super zombies spawn in different places and in different quantities every time. The good weapons spawn in different places every time. It's completely random and it keeps it, not only fresh, but exciting and tense every time because you never know when you're gonna be mobbed by 7 packs of zombies; or when a hunter is going to come out of nowhere and mob one your dudes; or when a tongue is just gonna come from nowhere and start dragging someone to their death; or if, when, and where a tank will spawn. This is probably one of the best coop experiences I've played in a long time and I can't wait for the competitive mode so I can get seven friends together and have four people trying to make their way through as humans while four people play the super zombies and try to shut the humans down. Also stop bitching about the graphics, they're not that great but they're not horrible and if you can't enjoy a fantastic game because it's not using Unreal 3 then your priorities on what makes a good game are completely out of whack. I'll say again to: if this game looked like Gears 2 it would not run at 60fps with that many enemies on screen at once with the action as fast and frenetic as it is. DaGamePimp 11-13-08, 01:58 PM Sure it could use some little things here and there but this game is dang fun IMO and when it comes right down to it I think that is probably what Valve set out to do ... make it fun , they succeeded ! - Jason formulanerd 11-13-08, 02:06 PM man.... how disappointing, the demo completely blows IMO. it feels like a cheap arcade game or something, the graphics are one of the better qualities of the game, IMO. are you guys following the hype train or what? the gameplay is abysmal, you're just running around shooting, theres no accuracy or aiming, or even a zoom function (unless you equip the rifle). it's just not any fun (to me), i think even COD5's zombie mode will be better. the game just feels like its in fast forward, everyone is running around at about 20mph. RunningRiot 11-13-08, 02:12 PM man.... how disappointing, the demo completely blows IMO. it feels like a cheap arcade game or something, the graphics are one of the better qualities of the game, IMO. are you guys following the hype train or what? the gameplay is abysmal, you're just running around shooting, theres no accuracy or aiming, or even a zoom function (unless you equip the rifle). it's just not any fun (to me), i think even COD5's zombie mode will be better. the game just feels like its in fast forward, everyone is running around at about 20mph. Play with friends and on a higher difficulty. It quickly turns into a combination of frenetic fast paced shooting with some serious strategy and teamwork required to survive from one saferoom to the next. You can't just have everyone run willy nilly around the level shooting everything they see and expect to survive. You have to cooridinate, plan, adapt. Watch each others back, save a downed teammate when a hunter grabs him with a 500ft tongue from out nowhere, use your molotovs to funnels hordes of zombies into an area where you can mow em down, if a boomer pukes on someone you have to prepare to defend them while a horde of zombies rushes him from nowhere, and if a tank shows up all of a sudden all other priorities go out the window until it's dead. Also as you take more damage you start to move considerably slower (since you know you can't really run with those awful flesh wounds) so you have to slow the group down so you don't leave a man behind to get mobbed or you have to use a precious health pack to heal him. You're really oversimplifying the game. chiliDog 11-13-08, 02:39 PM I played the Left 4 Dead demo for a good while last night. First impressions are: The graphics are a little dated. The voice acting is crap. Sometimes the zombies just run past you like they are late catching a train. But the gameplay is is completely intense. You learn very quickly to keep your team together and help each other, otherwise you are all dead... fast. It's scary in places and it has you laughing, yelling at your team mates and swearing all at the same time. I only played Live co-op (on the hardest setting) and everyone else was saying the same thing: FUN WilliamR 11-13-08, 02:42 PM Sure it could use some little things here and there but this game is dang fun IMO and when it comes right down to it I think that is probably what Valve set out to do ... make it fun , they succeeded ! - Jason I demand to know what you did with the real Jason. This is like the second game I've seen you praise in just as many weeks. What is going on here? :D Sorry but he's been replaced with an older more reliable model ;) . Seriously though I know I am about as critical as they come but I always try to focus on is it fun and while I am not here to 'praise' this game I do see what Valve was going for here and I think they delivered an entertaining game ( with some shortcomings , yes ) . I may be a jaded gamer but I am not bitter , we have some fantastic games available this holiday season and I am enjoying many of them ( heck I even like Fallout 3 even though I pretty much despise RPG's ... ok so maybe something is wrong with me , I should look into it :D ) . - Jason cesslinger 11-13-08, 03:35 PM The question is... who is going to join me tonight and dine on the carcasses of the infected? GT Chuck81 I will be home in about 2 hours ready to rock!! Expert of course. formulanerd 11-13-08, 04:15 PM Play with friends and on a higher difficulty. RobertR1 11-13-08, 04:17 PM 4 people on advanced is the right combination of fun and intensity at this game. Extreme is just an exercise in not throwing your controller. I haven't decided if it's more/less/equal to the fun in Horde for Gears 2. jhoff80 11-13-08, 04:19 PM I really like this game, but damn do I need to pick up a new headset at some point. The automatic "Reloading!" and "Weapons over here" just aren't good enough. (Though I thought I'd read there would be a command menu for in-game speech, is that in the demo?) JohnnyPraze 11-14-08, 08:33 AM I really like this game, but damn do I need to pick up a new headset at some point. The automatic "Reloading!" and "Weapons over here" just aren't good enough. (Though I thought I'd read there would be a command menu for in-game speech, is that in the demo?) Clicking one of the sticks makes them talk... (At least with bots it did) Replicant Nexus6 11-14-08, 08:35 AM I probably wont be buying this game (due to the ridiculous bounty that is this years holiday gaming season), but I do agree it is fun. The graphics can be a turn off, but once you see dozens of the zombies on screen you see why they had to do what they did. Im really impressed as to how the game forces you to work as a team. Last night I played with 3 other strangers and we immediately stuck together and helped each other out when possible. Lone wolfs cant survive here. Whether its enough to hold peoples interests for long remains to be seen. Mw182006 11-14-08, 10:22 AM Finally got around to this last night. Immediately turned it to expert and hopped on with 3 buddies...wow what a rush. Most fun I've had in awhile...isn't that supposed to be point here? iamlordxar 11-14-08, 11:00 AM Went on last night with some friends and kicked the tires. The graphics are a huge turnoff right off the bat, however, once you get into the action all the grief about the last gen graphics melt away. We spent the first 15 or 20 minutes just blowing each other away. I dig the friendly fire, makes it more realistic. The action can be extremely fast and brutal, looks like this will be a fun title. I hope the full game is not too short though. I've read there are 5 levels with 5 maps. Based on the demo the whole game could be a short 2 hour affair. If they consider the two parts to the demo as two separate maps then this will be far too short and may wear off it's sparkle too fast. I'm hoping for a good two hours per level. I loved Dead Rising, that games graphics weren't that spectacular either, but when you see a few hundred zombies on screen at any given time, you appreciate the sacrifice of horsepower, as long as the game is fun. Only one thing that really bugs me. You start on top of a building, open a door and sweep and clear an area below. One of the big pukers comes in nails you and next thing you know zombies pour in from behind in the area you just cleared. They should come from the front, but I guess that's a minor annoyance given the survivor theme of the game. It's impressive to see them climbing fences and other objects. mproper 11-14-08, 11:04 AM I might have to try this out. Anyone up for a demo playthrough with me tonight maybe around 10EST? Send me a friend request if so. maximuslcd 11-14-08, 12:45 PM Can't wait to download this demo tonight. Unfortunately, I will have to wait until Christmas for the full version, as my darn brother told our mom to get us both a copy for Christmas. Apparently his wife said he can't buy another game for a while, so now I suffer ! LOL LOl, my wife is the same way, I just got MS pacific rift a couple weeks ago and mentioned last night I wanted resistance 2 and fall out 3, my mom..errr wife said "well its too close to christmas to get any new games now" I just laugh and roll with it...... So i went and bought a new wireless router today to prove I still had my manhood:D NoThru22 11-14-08, 01:09 PM It's funny how people always trash the Source engines graphics but I've yet to see another game with facial animation even close to it. deveng 11-14-08, 02:01 PM The real question is whether I am going to get nauseated playing like I do when I play Half Life 2. I am OK with Team Fortress 2, and almost every other FPS except for halflife. I definately have to try the demo before buying the game. KLUNKDM 11-14-08, 05:03 PM I loved the demo and I think its just good zombie killing fun :) rocketknight73 11-14-08, 05:06 PM Meh, was not impressed . Oh well good thing it's only a demo.:o confidenceman 11-15-08, 11:34 AM Finally got around to downloading the demo yesterday. Not sure why I waited so long (actually, yes I am: it's called Fallout 3). Love the demo. It's got some of the qualities of Resistance 2's co-op mode, but with much more character and personality, and a lot less MMO-like. Sure, there's only some strategy involved (stay together, cover all entrances, heal one another), but it's a great setting. It looks great, plays great, and is tons of fun with other people. Srdjan 11-15-08, 08:40 PM Well guys after reading through this thread heres my 2c: I had downloaded both demos, 360 and PC, and have put in over 10-12hrs so far. Much of it on 360. At first I couldnt decide on which platform to get it. There are pros and cons for both of them but I'll just mention a couple of them. On PC, with everything maxed out, it looks so much better plus possibilitys for user Mods and free content makes it really appealing. But since I cant get used to playing wiht keyboard and mouse on my lap I been using 360 controller, wich works just fine, but I couldn't get my mic to work and that really made a huge difference. From about 20 games on PC I hardly heared anyone talk but on 360 everybody had mics. For such a co-op experince it is a must. After having a number of games on 360 (expert difficulty only) with a bunch of people from my friends list this is a must buy for me. I haven't had such a blast in a long time. Graphics aside this is pure gameplay goodness. Everytime it felt different, couple things that changed here and there really gives it a unique twist. This is the best CO-OP game I ever played. It gives a team play its rreal meaning - just the way it supposed to be. For example: let say even covering alleys felt tense with person at the front crouching while moving forward, guys in the middle covering him and overlooking the rooftops at the same time while last guy is covering the rear. Almost military formations. When the horde comes in rushing its easy to deal with. Without mics and proper comunication none of this would be possible. I could go on and keep praising this game but after all this is just a demo and a small taste of it. I just hope that Valve comes up with their promise of keeping it updated as PC version. But either way as I said before I'll be getting this on 360 come 20th but I might pick it up for PC when it drops in price. And guys make sure to check this video out it is a must watch! http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=GotNTtt1NNQ P.S. Name Leeroy Jenkins comes to mind FrankJ.Cone 11-15-08, 09:28 PM It's funny how people always trash the Source engines graphics but I've yet to see another game with facial animation even close to it. But you see the facial animations very infrequently and you see the lower quality everything else all the time. I found them OK given how fast the pace of play should be but in no way (IMHO) do they look "good". Chris Rein 11-18-08, 01:28 PM IGN gave this a 9.0! So, anyone have it? DaGamePimp 11-18-08, 03:21 PM I have it but have not played it yet , just popped it in and watched the intro so far (which is the same as the demo) . - Jason mikeloxlong 11-18-08, 03:50 PM Metacritic - http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/xbox360/left4dead one of the many words that I agree with is nerve-wracking...even the demo was a bit intense even though it was me and 3 AI danothemanoisgoo 11-18-08, 03:54 PM It's funny how people always trash the Source engines graphics but I've yet to see another game with facial animation even close to it. I know people said the demo was too easy, but the 3 parts of the campaign after the demo is where it really ramps up. I only played once through (the No Mercy level, same as the demo) and the end is very hard on normal difficulty, only one of us survived. I love the stats/ credit roll at the end of it though, apparently between the four of us we had 1788 zombies killed :D joerod 11-18-08, 05:35 PM I am going to jump in with this one.. Looks good. :) M-Desantos 11-18-08, 09:59 PM Melee is way too strong. When a horde attacks, you can just melee your way through it and not get hit. |
