View Full Version : Question on LCD TV color calibration using the TV's CMS (RGBCMY) and color filters

Hi, I'm trying to calibrate my LCD TV with Digital Video Essentials (DVE) Blu-ray edition and I have a couple of questions regarding the color calibration step using the supplied color filters :

1- Is there a difference between the term "color point accuracy" (color point coordinates accuracy) and the term "color saturation, brightness and tint"?

Do the levels of saturation, brightness and tint of a color defines its color point when calibrating?

Does the color temparture (grayscale) affect the color points accuracy ?

For exemple, when I calibrate the TV decoder's blue color, using the blue color filter and a test pattern from DVE, by adjusting its saturation and tint levels, do I calibrate its color point according to the HD standards (REC-709)?

2- My TV (37LG30) has a color management system (CMS) that enables me to adjust the saturation (and/or brightness?) and tint of the primary colors (red, green, blue) and also the secondary colors (cyan, magenta, yellow).

So, what is the procedure for calibrating all these colors using only the red, green and blue color filters supplied with DVE and the test pattern (it is not mentionned in the DVE tutorial)?

Here is what I did and I would like to know if it is correct :

a) Using the blue filter and the DVE color test pattern, I adjusted the global color saturation (and/or brightness?) control to calibrate the blue color (blue, cyan and magenta colors should be equal in brightness and match the background brightness of the test pattern).

I did not adjust the global tint control because it is not mentionned in the DVE Blu-ray tutorial. (Why is there a difference with the DVE DVD edition tutorial which mention tint adjustment?)

b) Using the red color filter, I adjusted the red color saturation (and/or brightness?) and tint controls in the CMS in order to match the red color brightness with the background brightness of the test pattern.

I also adjusted the magenta color saturation (and/or brightness?) and tint controls the same way, but because adjusting these also affects the magenta color calibration step using the blue color filter, I find a compromise between the two steps. Note that ajusting the red or blue color saturation (and/or brightness?) and tint controls does not affect at all the magenta color (why?).

c) I did the same procedure as b) using the green color filter to adjust the green color and found a compromise for yellow color using the red color filter and for cyan color using the blue color filter.

Thanks in advance !
