View Full Version : First Movie on Our New JVCs?
So what will be the first movie you sit and watch on your new JVC.
I have resisted seeing Batman The Dark Knight. I really don't know much about it other than people loved it.
It will be the first thing that I watch.
jostenmeat 11-12-08, 03:18 PM I'm not a NEW JVC owner, but do have an RS-1. I have no business chiming in here, but DK should be a good choice. :) But, FWIW, I recently re-watched The Prestige, and I just wanted to throw that rec out to you guys. Pic was ridonkulous. :)
My first movie will likely be Cars or WallE. I've got a 6 and 8 year old.
Later that night, Iron Man or the Dark Knight.
The Matrix (DVD) will be in there somewhere...
Mark Petersen 11-12-08, 03:27 PM Probably Dark Knight. I saw the movie once in IMAX and it was the best film based presentation that I've ever seen (at least from a resolution standpoint). I'll probably go back and watch some low APL torture test movies too like AVP: Requiem.
brianlsu 11-12-08, 03:51 PM Great thread, this should keep us busy.
I'm torn between Hellboy and WallE. I've seen DK and it's great. I just don't know if it has the wow factor, picture wise, that the other ones do. The movie had some added grain and in the beginning a yellowish, dim look to it. Probably artistic reasons, or my theater here sucks.
Or I could do a lockdown, take the day off, order pizza, and hunker down for the Star Wars movies.
Any way I go, I'm coming out of this pasty white after a month of watching movies.
I can't wait !!
I have been saving the Baraka Blu-ray for my first movie on the RS20.
John Ballentine 11-12-08, 05:28 PM DARK KNIGHT won't be released till the 9th. If the projector arrives on that day or shortly thereafter - that will be the first. If the projector arrives before the 9th - I've saved RATATOUILLE for first viewing, followed by DARK CITY, MATRIX TRILOGY, PLANET OF THE APES SET, DAREDEVIL and POLTERGEIST.
I plan to take one week vacation just to watch movies when the RS20 arrives:)
Sherardp 11-12-08, 05:32 PM I have been saving the Baraka Blu-ray for my first movie on the RS20.
Youre in for a serious treat.
I got a new Iron Man waiting. Have you guys seen it and if so was it good?
Mark Petersen 11-12-08, 06:17 PM DARK KNIGHT won't be released till the 9th.
Almost forgot. Kung Fu Panda is supposed to be reference quality.
I plan to take one week vacation just to watch movies when the RS20 arrives:)
The way this economy is going I may have a longer vacation than that :)
drj2000 11-12-08, 06:28 PM Hopefully my RS20 arrives just before the Dark Knight. I am sure Warmer will give it the 5 star treatment video wise. From what I remember from the IMAX presentation, it should be excellent at testing the limits of RS20.
Gary Lightfoot 11-12-08, 06:37 PM I got a new Iron Man waiting. Have you guys seen it and if so was it good?
I used to read the comics as a kid (still a big Marvel fan all these years later), and I just loved the movie! Even if you've no idea of the characters etc, it's still a fun movie IMHO with lots of action, so if you enjoy it half as much as I did I don't think you'll be too disappointed.

R Harkness 11-12-08, 06:45 PM I'll probably start with some familiar test discs - even some of my SD DVDs.
But "first full movie?" My idea has been to hold out watching all of my Blade Runner HD DVD until having a "real" projection set up.
Chris Dallas 11-12-08, 07:15 PM I think a new PJ regardless of make should be fed it's first movie with an Adult Blu-ray title so my 1st Blu-ray movie will be Pirates 2 Stagnetti's Revenge :D
Mark Petersen 11-12-08, 07:20 PM I think a new PJ regardless of make should be fed it's first movie with an Adult Blu-ray title so my 1st Blu-ray movie will be Pirates 2 Stagnetti's Revenge :D
This is a guaranteed way to ensure that the projector delivers plenty of "pop" and "eye candy" :)
noah katz 11-12-08, 07:47 PM The Fall is a must see, just gorgeous

You mean like "Debbie does Dallas?"
04FLHRCI 11-12-08, 08:28 PM Likely Kung Fu Panda; man, I'm really excited. I need to complete my subs, get surrounds mounted and get my screen wall built...whew - I'm out of breath all ready:-)
Larry
chadly25 11-12-08, 08:46 PM Gladiator for me :D
But "first full movie?" My idea has been to hold out watching all of my Blade Runner HD DVD until having a "real" projection set up.
That'll be a good one. I've got the blu-ray latest directors cut of Blade Runner from this summer. It'll be a great dark movie to see.
Lee Weber 11-12-08, 09:07 PM A vhs copy of jaws the revenge.
I wanna see what the reon processing can really do ;)
Seriously Blade Runner Blu.
WOLVERNOLE 11-12-08, 10:36 PM A vhs copy of jaws the revenge.

OK, NOW THAT IS FUNNY ! :D;)
Seriously Blade Runner Blu.
Good choice too
John Ballentine 11-12-08, 10:39 PM Almost forgot. Kung Fu Panda is supposed to be reference quality.
The way this economy is going I may have a longer vacation than that :)
YES! I forgot about Kung Fu Panda. RS20 eye candy for sure:).
My wife keeps reminding me about the economy every time I bring up the RS20 purchase - not to mention the A-lens and slide I need to go with it - as well as a new scope screen - and Blu-ray player. What economy:D?
A vhs copy
LOL!
My daughter and I will probably sit through all three LOTR-Extended Versions in one day. Then we'll go for a long walk... I don't own blu-ray yet but am holding off seeing Dark Knight until I do. A Panny BD35 might just end up in my stocking. That is if I've been good this year...
Bytehoven 11-12-08, 10:59 PM How about Sin City?
In addition to a good test for black levels, it really tests panel uniformity.
frank456 11-12-08, 11:01 PM Sin city has an excellent transfer with amazing black levels and a razor sharp image. An excellent demo disc for the RS20.
Bytehoven 11-12-08, 11:03 PM and maybe one of Mickey's best performances. :D
lovingdvd 11-13-08, 12:41 AM Sin city has an excellent transfer with amazing black levels and a razor sharp image. An excellent demo disc for the RS20.
Agreed 100%. Sin City so far has been hands down the best looking HD move (watched on Comcast On Demand a while back) I have seen on the RS1. It plays incredibly well to the RS1's strengths, mainly the incredible pop you get from all the scenes with deep blacks mixed with bright lights and objects. Plays right into the pj's native CR. Can't wait for this to be released on BluRay (early 2009?) and watch on the RS20!

OKay I'm sold. I'm going to get this title too even though I didn't care too much for the movie when I saw it in the theater. Of course the same could be true of other content that I watch like AVP: Requiem.
John Ballentine 11-13-08, 07:37 AM New reference (?) arriving Tuesday:

This may very well be the first film I watch on the RS20...
I have quite a few new movies starting to stack up now, I don't have it yet but Wall-E is the one I'm really looking forward to.
mrlittlejeans 11-13-08, 09:39 AM Sin City is one of the 15 blurays I've received in the past month or so that I haven't had time to watch yet. I agree that it looked excellent on the Comcast HD version a while ago. This might get first view in my theater. Also want to check out the new bond films, the godfathers, pale rider, lost boys and lest we forget... The Fifth Element.
sprakash 11-13-08, 10:27 AM I've held off seeing I am Legend to see it in the new PJ. And a Kurosawa DVD marathon during the holidays.

What if next year's Oscar nominees for best actor go like this: Heath Ledger for The Dark Knight, Edward Norton for The Incredible Hulk, Robert Downey Jr. for Iron MAn, and Ron Pearlman for Hellboy II. Did I miss someone? :D

Just be aware that there are black level problems in I am Legend that reduce the contrast and elevate the blacks. So much so that even an RS1 is unable to deliver it's full potential.

I already have that one & seen it on my RS1 it looks awesome.
I get Blu-ray titles 2-4 weeks early, I also have the Dark Knight Blu-ray looks amazing. If you're ever in Toronto visit my store I have every Blu-ray title on the planet well before the competition.
Hi Chris,
What was the aspect switching like on TDK?
R Harkness 11-13-08, 02:07 PM I also have the Dark Knight Blu-ray l
:eek::eek::eek:
The most speculated upon release in memory, doesn't come out for over a month from now, and you've already got a copy?
What do you do?
Cheers,

I am an executive producer.
Chris Dallas 11-13-08, 04:35 PM Hi Chris,
What was the aspect switching like on TDK?
As you probably are aware The Dark Knight is the 1st movie of it's kind shot with 1.66 and 2.40 aspect ratios.
On the Dark Knight, the IMAX scenes were shot using a 1.66 aspect ratio lens, (some say it's 1.44 but it's not) and the non-imax (panavision) scenes were shot with a 2.40:1 aspect ratio.
I've seen the 2.40:1 version on my home theatre and have also seen it at an IMAX theater as well. The resolution on the Blu-ray is clear enough that you can actually see the difference in grain structure and sharpness between the 2 aspect ratios...It is quite spectacular imo and all of you will love it.
R Harkness 11-13-08, 04:47 PM Ahhh...that explains the Ferrari's. ;)
*Hops in old Honda Accord to get to film sound mix....*
Cheers,

rmccormack 11-14-08, 08:36 AM I think Casino Royale was the first good movie and good looking BD i saw....cant wait for DK and Shawshank! Hope they do a hell of a restore on that one. Wont bother seeing Kung Fu Panda since i dont have kids

Chris, since you are kinda insider :D can you find out how this Dark Knight BR transfer was color corrected? Do they still continue to use SMPTE-C monitors or have they switched to Rec. 709?
Sorry for the off-topic!

Although not the answer I was hoping, thanks!
Mark Petersen 11-14-08, 10:47 AM So when you watch it on your Cinemascope screen - what happens when the aspect ratio changes from 2:40 to 1:66?
Good question. I saw DK in IMAX and it was the best film based presentation that I've ever seen, at least as far as resolution goes. The scenes filmed in IMAX were night and day different between the scenes filmed in 35mm. Unfortunately the sampling and resolution in BD has to be the same for the IMAX scenes as 35mm so I can't imagine that the resolution differences can be preserved. So it could be the case that the 35mm and IMAX scenes will look about the same and only the AR is changed :(
mhafner 11-14-08, 10:55 AM Sunshine. Can use infinite On-Off.
Unfortunately, I'm not getting in on the RS20 train, but if it were me there wouldn't be a first movie, but instead a crapload of demo scenes from every movie I own while thinking, "Oh, this scene will showcase the blacks! This scene will show off the ANSI! This scene just f-ing rocks!!!" And by the time I'm done going through scenes from every movie I own, it'll be too late at night to actually watch a movie.
My second choice would be Wall-E.
lovingdvd 11-14-08, 04:11 PM Sin City is one of the 15 blurays I've received in the past month...
I'm almost certain that Sin City has not been released yet on Blu Ray. Did you mean a standard DVD?
mrlittlejeans 11-14-08, 04:29 PM I'm almost certain that Sin City has not been released yet on Blu Ray. Did you mean a standard DVD?
Nope. I mean Blu Ray. I got it a few weeks ago. I was pretty surprised when I saw it too, especially since I was just browsing to see how much more movies were going to cost me up here compared to the states.

Daniel Hutnicki 11-14-08, 05:16 PM not a good movie but in terms of color, get Speed Racer. The image is crystal clear and as sharp as a knife
Mark Petersen 11-14-08, 05:35 PM The BR version of 'Master&Commander' for me.
This is a good choice too. I remember some dark scenes inside the ship at the beginning of the movie that looked just okay on my old JVC HD2K. I remember thinking at the time that I'd like to see those scenes with a projector with more contrast. Something more like a CRT. Now I get a chance to do exactly that.
Mark Petersen 11-14-08, 06:10 PM Here is a choice that John Ballentine will appreciate: Hellboy II. It comes out on the 18th. We watched the HB2 trailer on the RS20 at the EH Expo and there was one particular dark scene that we wanted to freeze and then run the iris up and down to see how much of a difference the added contrast makes in that particular scene. We weren't able to because we couldn't monopolize the projector so here is our chance :)
Henrik78 11-14-08, 08:35 PM So when you watch it on your Cinemascope screen - what happens when the aspect ratio changes from 2:40 to 1:66?
Interesting, i would like to know that too...¨
BTW: That DK IMAX Prologue clip on B.Begins looked awesome. The best picture i´ve ever seen coming out of my BD player...

Thanks for the clarification. That is fantastic! Wow I cannot believe it is out. I wonder if this is only available in Canada. Anyone know?
According to Amazon's US site it will be released on December 9, 2008. I hope that is correct information. If all goes well with the RS20 deliveries I'm thinking the timing of this movie's release will be nearly perfect.
Bytehoven 11-15-08, 12:32 AM Looks like Sin City BD imports are now available from some places.
takisot 11-15-08, 05:12 AM Last night I watched Wall-E BluRay with my RS-1/RadianceXD and it looked spectacular!
This is a great first movie for all of you lucky RS-20 buyers! Especially the deep space and spacecraft sequences of the movie look amazing! The blacks were solid, the colors spot on and the image was ultra sharp. I know, it is an animation but still...wow!
My Wall-E blu-ray just shipped from Amazon. Yes! I have a family friendly alternative to Cars to see as the first movie.
lovingdvd 11-16-08, 09:26 PM Looks like Sin City BD imports are now available from some places.
Glad to know, thanks. If its true that Sin City will be available here in the U.S. as of December 9th I'll just wait for that. Anyone know if this is indeed the case?
lovingdvd 12-15-08, 11:41 PM Also don't forget about the Hulk (2003) on Blu-ray. In the nearly two years I had my RS1 this movie is the second best title PQ-wise I've seen on the system, right behind Sin City.
Hulk is not only razor sharp and HIGHLY detailed (see every eyelash etc) but it also has several scenes that play very well into the core strength of the RSxx (super high native CR) - several scenes with very bright lights/objects against pitch black backgrounds.
The best looking scene in the movie IMO is where the Hulk and his dad are sitting face to face outside at night - huge spot lights shine on the set against a pitch black backdrop. Ton of depth in that scene and others. Highly recommended if you haven't checked this out yet. Can't wait to see it on the RS20.

GoCaboNow 12-16-08, 02:19 PM I don't know? What will be the hot new movie in MARCH when I get it?
If nothing new out KungFu Panda, Walle, iron man and the dark night for the adults. I may do a forced abstinence of my favorites a month or more before I get the PJ. Kind of like a pre-marriage wedding night thing...
R Harkness 12-16-08, 03:07 PM Also don't forget about the Hulk (2003) on Blu-ray.
Absolutely!
I've seen tons of Blu Rays and HD DVDs and aside from perhaps computer animation titles I can't think of anything better than Ang Lee's Hulk for HD picture quality (movie).
It's super sharp, super detailed, gorgeously photographed, with beautiful bright scenes and dark scenes and everything in between. A plus is the particularly artistic/dramatic cinematography: this film is filled with some of the most gorgeously lit close ups I've seen in a movie and the 3D effect of characters looking right out of the screen at you is amazing.
Plus...I'm one of those mutant viewers who actually liked the film!
As to my first movie on the JVC RS20, I've been saving a full viewing of Blade Runner (HD DVD) for the JVC. I'm so glad that one of my favourite all time films managed to fulfill so spectacularly the promise of Blu Ray (and HD DVD), in transfer quality. To have a copy of this movie in such spectacular quality just makes me giddy.

Pixar "films' are produced electronically and are placed on Blue Ray and DVD disks without any film involvement. You are looking at the output of a computer.
You can not get any higher resolution/sharper image than that.
