Blackouts:
Viewers in Green Bay, Cincinnati, Tampa Bay, Kansas City, and Charlotte will not see an early CBS game because their home town team is playing at home on FOX at the same time.
Viewers in Seattle and San Francisco will not see a late CBS game because their home town team is playing at home on FOX at the same time.
mikepier 11-12-08, 07:47 PM Good news: No blackouts in NYC
Bad news: We get ARI/SEA
Well I guess it's either that or STL/SF.
coyoteaz 11-12-08, 07:57 PM Watching the Seattle defense fail to keep up with one of the best offenses in the league should be at least somewhat entertaining. I'd much rather see the Cards game than the Bears-Packers game we're getting here in Dallas, but I'm slightly biased by being a recent transplant from AZ.

Well they scheduled 2 NFC West matchups at the same time, horrible planning. The division has 3 teams at 2-7.
I guess what makes up for it is that I can watch the NYJ/NE game Thu night on my local station since I don't have NFL Net on cable.

Why would you care what FOX is showing at 4:00? It's a CBS weekend in NY, Ravens @ Giants at 1 and SD/Pit at 4:15.

Exactly ;)
ccotenj 11-12-08, 10:25 PM wonder how come the cbs "a-team" gets sd/pitt instead of bal/nyg? simply because it's the 4:15 game? bal/nyg is the "best" game of the week, at during the day on sunday...

It's always a plus if we get a bonus game in NY because it gives you the option to switch to another game if the major game being shown is a blowout, or should I say non-competitive.
Plus not everyone is a SD or Pit fan.
StudioTech 11-12-08, 10:33 PM Just curious. Anyone know what was the reasoning was behind the creation of the rule that says that the visiting team chooses which network covers the game as opposed to the home team?

good question. and i don't know the answer. iirc, it's been that way ever since the merger.
i'm sure there was SOME type of rationale behind it. or maybe they just ran out of scotch at the negotiating table, and they flipped a coin to decide... :)

A 4:15 pm game is almost always the A game on the DH network

Not a choice. Games with a visiting NFC team are on Fox, and games with a visiting AFC team are on CBS. Games on NBC, ESPN, and NFLN are exempt from this of course. I suspect it goes back to the old days where the home market was always blacked out of the game no matter if it was sold out or not.

A larger portion of the country will get the 4:15 game. I'm surprised they didn't move the Giants game to 4:15, since the Jets are playing tonight.

The Giants were the reason the blackout rule was changed. They needed a stadium to play in for 1973 since Yankee Stadium was being renovated and Giants Stadium wasn't built yet. Originally they couldn't get an agreement to play in the Yale Bowl because that would have meant that the CT stations would have to black out the home games, once they got the NFL to revise it to say the game is blacked out only if it's not sold out did they get the deal to use Yale.

There's no moving games until the flex weeks. (even from 1 to 4)
And I guess CBS and the league didn't expect Giants/Ravens to be their big matchup.

From what I've heard, the blackout rule was altered to start showing home games when the Redskins became good and they started selling out games, and Washington politicians found it harder to get tickets, and couldn't watch on tv.

This is a flex week, but the NFL has moved games between 1 and 4 for many years regardless of the week.

Nope.
1973: With the renovation of Yankee Stadium into a baseball only facility the Giants are forced to find a new home. Finding a permanent home was easy, as the Giants and the New Jersey town of East Rutherford agreed on the building of a state of the art stadium. However, the stadium would not be completed until 1976, and the Giants need to find a temporary home. The Giants wanted to play on the campus of Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut. However New Haven officials were reluctant because of the NFL's blackout rule. NFL Commissioner Pete Rozelle then with help of national politicians would persuade the FCC to change the rule so that the rule was only in effect if the game was not sold out in advance. This would clear the way for the Giants to play in New Haven after playing their first 2 games of the season at Yankee Stadium.

"The Redskins' winning ways made them a hit with TV networks. They were among the top teams in national television appearances in the 1970s, including 16 games on ABC's Monday Night Football, which became a national spectacle as the NFL took on a prime-time image. Fascination in the Redskins even consumed members of Congress, some of whom disliked not being able to see the Redskins play at home because of the NFL's television blackout rule and threatened legislative action against the league, according to Total Football II: The Official Encyclopedia of the National Football League. The NFL eventually adopted a rule in 1973 allowing the blackout to be lifted if a game is sold out 72 hours in advance."
grodri02 11-13-08, 12:49 PM Tonights game Jets Vs. Pats is going to be in the NFL network. I live in NYC...is it going to be passed in any local channel in HD?
Thanks

i would say yes....it was last year.
mikepier 11-13-08, 01:00 PM i would say yes....it was last year.
It will be on WPIX-DT CW11 in HD.
dcowboy7 11-13-08, 01:01 PM yea, me too... would have made sense...
no it makes no sense to move giants to 4:15:
1. if bal/nyg moves to 4:15 then in ny for example cbs has no big game at 1:00....then at 4:15 they have to show bal/nyg & cant show sd/pit.
2. this way cbs shows bal/nyg at 1:00 then that leads into sd/pit at 4:15...they have all day covered.

Read post #9 above.
henry296 11-13-08, 01:19 PM I noticed this by looking at my guide, but why do Charlotte and Greenville get the Jax/Ten game instead of Pit/SD. It doesn't bother me since i have Sunday ticket, but thought that was interesting.

They could have swapped the BAL/NYG game with either the SD/PIT game or TEN/JAC game.
dcowboy7 11-13-08, 01:59 PM They could have swapped the BAL/NYG game with either the SD/PIT game or TEN/JAC game.
sd/pit is the national game & a better matchup nationally ratings wise...last weeks steelers game was the highest rated cbs game this year.

Yeah true. PIT has been in the spotlight for the past 3 weeks:
IND/PIT CBS late DH
PIT/WAS MNF
NYG/PIT FOX late DH

theyre as much as baltimore.

Will this make you feel better? It's from the Giants website.
The Giants' first choice was the Yale Bowl, but the Yale Bowl representatives turned down the team's first request because it would have meant a blackout for the local schedule due to the blackout rule. The Giants' next choice was to play at Princeton University, but they also turned down the Giants. Things were so bad that when the league announced the 1973 schedule, it didn't even say where the games would be played. In light of the Giants' problems, Commissioner Pete Rozelle, with the help from national politicians, modified the blackout rule so that the rule was only in effect if the game was not sold out in advance. With the rule change came a change of heart by the Yale Bowl representatives.

I'm not saying you are wrong...
I'm just saying there's always more to the story.
StudioTech 11-13-08, 04:58 PM It will be on WPIX-DT CW11 in HD.
In addition, Ch. 11 will have a pre-game show at 7:30 (I'm guessing in HD as well)
http://www.wpix.com/ny_jets
Available locally on WPIX, the station will also air “The WPIX Countdown to Kickoff” a 30-minute original pre-game special from 7:30-8pm ET hosted by WPIX Sports Anchor Sal Marchiano and Craig Carton, current co-host of WFAN’s morning show “Boomer & Carton” with Boomer Esiason. WPIX Sports Anchor Lolita Lopez will also be reporting live from Gillette Stadium throughout the pre-game event. “The WPIX Countdown to Kickoff” will air Thursday, November 13 from 7:30-8pm ET.
humdinger70 11-13-08, 05:09 PM Speaking of blackouts, how many times has the Monday Night Football game (since the start of MNF in 1970) been blacked out in the market where the game was being played?

I don't see the the game listed as HD on WPIX 11. The schedule on their website doesn't list HD for this game, like it does for other HD programs. I have a bad feeling about this. Hope I'm wrong.

mikepier 11-14-08, 07:26 AM Yeah true. PIT has been in the spotlight for the past 3 weeks:
IND/PIT CBS late DH
PIT/WAS MNF
NYG/PIT FOX late DH
Forgot to mention, they are on Thu night football next week against the Bengals. Including this Sundays game, that's 5 weeks in a row they've been in the spotlight.

And play the Patriots, Cowboys, Ravens and Titans the four weeks after that. That could be pretty much 9 straight weeks of high profile TV games.

I looked at PIT schedule next couple of weeks:
Nov 16 SD @ PIT 4:15 CBS DH
Nov 20 CIN @ PIT 8:15 ThuNF
Nov 30 PIT @ NE 4:15 CBSDH
Dec 07 DAL @ PIT 4:15 FOX DH
Dec 14 PIT @ BAL 1:00 CBS DH (maybe switched to 4:15?)
On Dec 14th, the only late game on CBS is NE/OAK, so is it possible they could add another 4:15 game like PIT/BAL ?
On Dec 21st, they play TEN at 1:00, which will probably stay since there are 3 late CBS games on the West coast that day.

Also, the Ravens or Titans games could be flexed to Sunday night if a team can have 6 prime time games. The Steelers already had 2 Sunday, 2 Mondays and 1 Thursday.

Aren't some of these games "protected" by the networks from being flexed?
dcowboy7 11-14-08, 03:55 PM Aren't some of these games "protected" by the networks from being flexed?
this is the flex block list:
Week 11 SD @ PIT ....CHI @ GB
Week 12 NYJ @ TEN ....NYG @ ARZ
Week 13 PIT @ NE ....NYG @ WAS
Week 14 JAX @ CHI ....DAL @ PIT
Week 15 None ....None
Week 16 PIT @ TEN ....PHI @ WAS
TravelFan1 11-14-08, 04:20 PM how much in advance the Networks have to protect games on week 17? If my memory doesn't fail me, CBS and FOX can protect one game on week 17 each.
TravelFan1 11-14-08, 04:23 PM also, analyzing week 14, I'd guess we'll have Philly at Giants moving to prime time... unless there are restrictions preventing the same 2 teams being on Sunday Night, as the Philly at Giants was a Sunday Night game last week.

Ravens versus Redskins might be the better game at that point. Lots of football to be played before they have to decide, starting with the Skins/Cowboys and Ravens/Giants this week.

I would think WAS/BAL would be flexed. If they move the PHI/NYG game, that would max out the Eagles at 6 primetime games, meaning they wouldn't be able to move the Week 17 DAL/PHI game to primetime.
dcowboy7 11-15-08, 08:30 PM per RB at the506.com here is the % tv coverage breakout:

They had to move that game because the Jets and Giants couldn't both play at 1 and FOX protected the Giants game.
