View Full Version : Fist Full Of Dollars
filmbuff2 11-12-08, 06:24 PM I noticed a very positive review with the usual screen shots over at DVD Beaver for this recently released Italian version - it appears to be Region free and also has English audio soundtrack. Looks like I will be getting a copy.
Gary Murrell 11-12-08, 06:56 PM I would hold out for the what should be soon Fox US release, it is very tempting but I am going to wait myself
-Gary
MSmith83 11-12-08, 11:19 PM It is indeed very tempting, and good to have as an option in case MGM/Fox doesn't announce it anytime soon.
Rob Tomlin 11-12-08, 11:22 PM This was on one of the HD Movie channels a few weeks ago. I have it stored on my HD DVR which will hold me over until it is released here on Blu.
"I don't think it's nice, you laughin'. You see, my mule don't like people laughing. He gets the crazy idea you're laughin' at him. Now if you apologize, like I know you're going to, I might convince him that you really didn't mean it. "
bplewis24 11-12-08, 11:34 PM My favorite is For a Few Dollars More. Is that one out as well? Is it likely Fox/MGM will release them stateside at the same time?

I don't know the answer to your question, but the Sergio Leone film that I am really wanting badly is one of my favorite movies of all time: Once Upon a Time in the West.
Paramount just did a full restoration on this title, so I would hope to see it on Blu before too long.

YES! As much as I love For a Few Dollars More, and The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly... Once Upon a Time in the West is the best western, and one of the best films ever made. Charles Bronson... Henry Fonda... just so awesome, and I think it would look AMAZING in HD... just thinking about it has me wanting to watch my DVD lol.

Didnt they do some sharpening to that title?
Art Sonneborn 11-13-08, 07:07 AM I'm getting too old to wait all the time. Besides, these may be dribbled in over years or all be released like the Dirty Harry series. Where can it be imported from ?

There are a few sites listed within this review (http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film2/DVDReviews42/fistful_of_dollars_blu-ray.htm). The reviewer got his from dvd.it.
Gary Murrell 11-13-08, 09:41 AM so let me get this straight, it has PCM Italiano and english subs, I take back what I said earlier, this may have to be ordered :)
anyone know if the english subs are in the image and not the letterboxing?

Matt_Stevens 11-13-08, 02:35 PM Those screen caps show wonderully detailed grain. My God, I hope we see the same thing here and not smeared, oily noise reduced ****.
Because the documentary is PAL I'll pass and hope for a release here. If that release turns out to be grain scrubbed I'll import this one.
However, I love the two sequels much more.
Brajesh 11-13-08, 03:38 PM I see dvd.it has 'For a Few Dollars More' on BD (http://blu-ray.dvd.it/western/for-a-few-dollars-more-blu-ray/dettaglio/id-1049119/) as well. Anyone know of its quality?
Update: Found this German review w/rollover screenshots (http://web12.dvd2web.de/hd_dollars/hd_dollars.htm). Looks pretty good as well. Grain, detail are intact.

Agree 100% - I can't even remember the number of times I have watched Once Upon a Time in the West, and I only purchased it a couple of years ago :)
What the heck is up with those DVD screenshots. I have a hard time believing the DVD looks like that.
cnikirk 11-13-08, 05:54 PM DVDIT also says there is a collertor's addition. I can't figure out what is different about it yet.

The opening scene is simply amazing. The tension that Leone creates perfectly set the tone for the rest of the movie.
And you didn't even mention one of the best aspects of the film: the haunting score by Ennio Morricone!
Thanks, I put that one in my queue :)

DVD or waiting for Blu? The DVD doesn't look so good, but if you have never seen the film, it's definitely worth watching now imo.

DVD, since I've never seen it before. Plus, if/when it's ever released on blu-ray I'll know whether I want to buy it or not.

If it's "not", don't tell me, because I don't want my opinion of you to drop. :p

Didn't think I even had to mention Ennio Morricone... it should be a given in a Leone film that the score is excellent.

Yes, For a Few Dollars More does not have English audio or English subtitles.

Hearing Clint dubbed in italiano is nothing to get exited about ;)
If you look at the mouths you can tell many of the italian actor speak in sloppy english ;)
A lot Italian movies between the 60-80:s was shot with an international release in mind and so they went for english dialog, and therefore ENGLISH is the "original" soundtrack. I watched a few scenes from Argento movies in italian. Watching John Saxon and David Hemmings dubbed to italian is hilarious :D

We should be in for a treat when Paramount gets around to releasing this one, saw it at the Brattle in Cambridge last September. Looked gorgeous.

There are some interlacing artifacts in some shots, but other than that it looks like a typical DVD to me. Bear in mind that it's scaled to BD resolution for comparison, which may be blown up larger than it would normally be if you watched it on your monitor (if the monitor's resolution is less than 1920x1080). Sometimes we don't realize just how inadequate DVD looks until we can compare it to HD.

I saw the restored print a few months ago at The Academy Theater in Beverly Hills. There are some limitations inherent to the source, but it did look great overall. LOVE this movie!

Yeah my work monitor is definitely not 1920 x 1080. And I see the interlacing artifacts on the first two DVD shots but the last two... well I've never seen anything quite like it and I've looked at a lot of Xylon's comparison threads. Is this just my monitor or is that what you're seeing as well.

Well, the encoding of that German Paramount SE DVD is messed up resulting in an interlaced transfer. You can read a bit more about it here (http://dvdfreak.bloudil.cz/freak.php?p=fistfulofdollars&dz=0)...
Cheers! ;)

Wow!!
One of my biggest dreams for Blu-Ray would be a Sergio Leone box set. And if they can make FISTFUL... look this good I can only imagine how amazing something like ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST would look.
jvillain 11-16-08, 03:11 PM Those screen caps look great. Bring on the SL box sets.
