View Full Version : Question about colorspace and BTB?

I have an Optoma HD65 projector connected to a PS3 by HDMI. I've used the AVS disc to adjust all my settings a good as I can by eye, with good results IMHO. I know that it could be better, but i don't have the cash to purchase equipment/software at the moment. However, I would really appreiciate any input on the following:

Regardless of the settings I use on the PS3 I can only select RGB in my colorspace options on the HD65. IF I try YCbCr I get a green cast over the entire screen/picture. Does this sound correct, or should I be able to select either? And, does it matter?

My other question is about BTB(Blacker than Black). I am unable to get BTB to show up with the PS3/HD65. I have tried it with HDMI and Component and every setting in the PS3. Just won't work. I can get BTB with my desktop over component to the HD65. Which points to the PS3 as being the cause, but I think that there are many people who are able to get BTB with the PS3. I also have no problem showing White peak information with all of the above.

Any thoughts?

Thanks Jason

You need to ativate the super white option to get BtB on the PS3... They really hid that one well.

Actually even with super white enabled you wont see BTB unless the thing is also outputting YCrCb. On RGB video levels it does indeed output black and white at correct levels but it also appears to crush below black detail to those same levels. That data is only visible with component format being output.

Thanks for the reply guys.

I have tried using the recommended PS3, and all other, settings:

RGB Limited
YCrCB forced on
Superwhite on

Still no BTB. I think it must be because of the way the HD65 handles HDMI signals. The PS3 is outputting YCrCb for Blueray but I can still only chose RGB colorspace on the HD65.

Thanks Jason

I had the same on my Toshiba HD-DVD (EP30) on my BenQ PE7700. No matter what I did I couldn't get BtB. With my new W5000 I get BtB with no further adjustments. Dunno why, maybe the scaling clip the blacks or something. I have no explanation for the PS3 issue though, mine does it fine both to my PE7700 and my W5000 and Samsung LCD.

Even if the PS3 outputs BTB signals (super whites ON) you have to find a black level option on your projector (ex.: black level, black stretcher, hdmi black level, deep black, etc.).

With my TV (37LG30) I have to set the black level option to high otherwise it crushes the BTB signals.

I think this is good advice. The projector (if it has black level settings) needs to be expecting what you are sending from the PS3.

If you are using the settings you listed, then the PS3 is outputting BTB and WTW. You can narrow your search down to the display device if nothing else is in the chain. I have seen some displays that just flat out cut the BTB and WTW and there is nothing you can do about it. Others just require the correct settings. BTB is not all that important at the display, but WTW (IMO) is.

I don't know about the colorspace setting. If you have YCbCr On and you are playing back a DVD/BD, then you are getting YCbCr at the display. In the end it doesn't really matter provided the decoding is being done correctly somewhere (either PS3 or display).

Thanks for the replys guy's.

The HD65 does not have any settings for HDMI/Black Levels. I'll be trying all the various combinations of settings again tonight, just to double check. It probably doesn't matter either way as I am getting black @ 16 and I can see peak white(WTW) above 234 using the AVS disc.

Thanks again
