View Full Version : RS1 clicking but not always turning on

Maybe a question to call JVC on directly, but what the heck there's so much knowledge here I'll give it a shot.

We had cleaners in our house the other days, and apparently my 1 year old RS1 was part of the cleaning. I've never had any problems prior... when you hit the on button the thing always came right on (well, of course the bulb has to fully fire up but I can see it light instantly looking into the lens).

Now when I try to turn on, I usually get a loud clicking sound (never heard before) for a few seconds with no bulb activation and then the unit just goes back off. Three of four more attempts it does come on and works fine, with no sounds other than normal fan noise as far as I can hear.

It doesn't take a genius to guess they sprayed it with something to clean it and a little fluid got in there somewhere. Any thoughts on how to remedy? I can easily live with it now, but I don't want it to progress to total failure... I'm definitely not ready for an upgrade (at least until the Dow gets back to 14k... around the same time the RS80 is launched).

Any thoughts appreciated,
-Chris C.

From time to time I have had that same issue with my Studio Experience 20HD and all it usually takes is to remove the bulb and re-insert it. I've even gone as far as cleaning the contacts on the bulb and I haven't had it happen since.

James is likely right. The cleaners probably banged on it with the handle of their duster to knock the dust out  and jarred the bulb loose just a tad.

Thanks guys for the thoughts. I will try to reseat the bulb this weekend. Took about 7 tries to turn on last night, but once it came on it worked fine.

I make sure my Home Threater room is locked when the cleaners come. I have a special way I like it cleaned anyway:)

Any luck with re-seating the bulb?

Sadly, no, but thanks for asking.

Actually I didn't even try to re-seat the bulb until Friday night. After getting used to having to try to turn it on several times before it would work (and actually I realized the RS1 attempts three bulb ignites itself before giving up), and even having it turn on the first try a couple of times, now the bulb won't ignite at all, no matter what I do. I did try taking the bulb out and re-seating to no avail. The lamp light starts flashing and the warning light comes on(or vice versa) once it fails to start.

I'd noticed some flickering in the picture for sometime (minor in high lamp mode, but made low lamp mode unusable), so perhaps (hopefully) it is just a bad lamp. Only has 800 hours on it, and still looked plenty bright to my eyes.

I'm going to try JVC tech support in the morning. If I can just replace the bulb and all is well, I will be happy, even though only 800 hours out of the first one is a jip.

Edit: BTW... how do I get rid of that "cool guy" emoticon I accidentally added?

You can edit the thead for the emoticon.

For the unit...lamp may fix the problem. 800 is certainly low, but lamps are finickly things so they can cause issue like this.

Update: New bulb solved the problem! No issues now, other than mild consternation that I only got a feeble 800 hours out of my first bulb.
