View Full Version : Shotgun mic audio output to DVD problem
Ecoastvideo 11-14-08, 06:23 PM I shoot with two Sony VX2100 cameras, sometimes attaching an AT 897 shotgun mic using a stereo XLR to mini plug input. I edit on Canopus Edius and then output to DVCAM and convert to DVD.
The problem I am experiencing is that SOMETIMES the DVD audio is missing.
The audio is fine while editing and when transferred to tape, but when it goes to DVD the audio is missing when played back on SOME DVD players (maybe 1 in 10 players have this problem). You can barely hear a sound on the DVD if the volume is cranked up, but on other DVD players the audio is fine.
I have found this problem on different DVD burners, so it's not the burner.
I think that the problem is somehow related to the stereo audio track that the videotape is recorded on. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Sorry but if the cam plays the recordings with sound,ie on a tv etc and you get sound it must be software related, one sure way to tell would be to connect the cam to a dvd recorder via the i.link and if there is sound will tell you.
Ecoastvideo 11-16-08, 04:43 PM I agree. I thinks the audio issue is related to the Edius software, but they can't seem to tell me why I would have this particular DVD problem. I was hoping that somebody here might have an idea.
it's probably an issue that happens when you are encoding the audio for the dvd.
disable all of the settings that affect how the audio is played back.
Rich127 11-17-08, 02:48 PM Any ideas would be appreciated. You haven't really explained how you encoded to DVD and if you used AC3 or PCM audio. And how you authored your DVD.
I'm not sure of everything Canopus Edius does, but if it authors you DVD then Canopus should be able to help.

Ecoastvideo 11-17-08, 07:41 PM Unfortunately I'm not familiar with the terms AC3 or PCM. I output the video from Edius to DVCAM using Sony DSR-11. I then have the DVD authored from tape and multiple copies printed by a professional service. They say they have never run into this problem before where the DVD audio plays fine on some players and disappears on others.
I have also tried my own tests, burning the DVD on SonyDrive VRD-VC20. The same results occurred on the DVD playback.
If I were to disable a setting, would that be in the DSR-11? The only setting I see is FS48K vs 32K. The DVD recorder has no options to disable.
you first need to learn what you are doing in order to solve this problem... i'm guessing that you are creating .ac3 audio files.
try turning off all pre-processing of the audio when encoding it to ac3, including dynamic range compression and input filtering... that stuff should have been fixed in the edit process.

Can you tell me when, during the process, this ac3 encoding takes place? Is it within the Edius editing, or transferring from Edius to tape, or tape to DVD?
I apologize for my ignorance in these technical matters. Basically, I'm a video producer. I thank you for your guidance!
i haven't worked with edius for a long time, but i'm wondering what happens with "DVD authored from tape"... you said that you exported it to dvcam, which sounds like a standard dv avi file format, which would then get re-encoded to ac3 by your dvd service.
re-read the last post that rich made, ask your dvd service what they are doing.
the bottom line here is that there is no reason for you to be farming out your dvd authoring, there are a ton of software tools that do an xlnt job of it... i built a cheap dvd duplicator years ago, for less than $300, and i do all of my own authoring and dupe work.
Ecoastvideo 11-18-08, 02:15 PM I've always had my DVDs authored and printed by an outsource, but you've given me some food for thought. Thanks.
i bet that edius has a way to author dvds... even if you just do the master, and get that duped, it will be cheaper.
i use pioneer burners and taiyo-yuden premium dvd-r discs, typically from supermediastore.com, 100 at a time, and i get the dvd cases from polylinecorp.com, because they come in a double-box, and don't get broken up as easily in shipping.
