View Full Version : Should an IR extender behave differently with different remotes?

I have an IR extender with the IR emitters and equipment behind a closed cabinet. (I forget which extender brand offhand, but its about 4 or 5 years old.)

Anyway, I just bought a Panasonic BD55 Blue-Ray, and I'm getting some flakey behaviour.

If I use the Panasonic remote through the extender, everything works fine. But if I use my Harmony One, operation is very sporadic. Sometimes I need to press a button 10 times before it will be seen by the BD player.

The Harmony One remote works fine through the extender with all my other devices.

Also - if I open the cabinet door and use the remotes directly, bypassing the extender, then both the Panasonic and the Harmony work fine.

My question is: do IR extenders have the same output level regardless of input level? Why would there be a problem only with the Harmony, only with one device, and only if I use it through the extender?

My first suggestion in trouble shooting the problem would be checking the placement of the IR emitter. The Panasonic remote is specifically made to control that Blu-ray player as you can see. It's possible that the combination of the Harmony and the extender are overwhelming the IR receiver of your blu ray player. Here's a few things to try:

1. Check the placement of the emitter.
2. When you're sure you have the correct placement try holding the emitter a few inches away from the blu-ray player to see if it responds better. You can also try putting a piece of black electrical tape with a pinhole over the IR eye to cut down the signal.
3. Try moving the blu-ray player as far as you can from the other devices temporarily to see if it then works. The extender system you have may be getting interference from your TV.
