I was told by a dealer this weekend that the RS20 needs an external VP to do CH 2.35. Is this true? Or does JVC recommend getting an external VP if you want to do 2.35?
The pitch he gave me was you can take an RS20 + lens + external vp, but for 5K more I could just get a Runco. Not sure what the model number was, but he was quoting $25k (CAD). Any thoughts?

I recommend shopping elsewhere.

Definitely shop elsewhere. (no VP needed w/ RS20 by the way)

I think it's half true.
The RS20 will do the vertical expansion for 2.35, but not the horizontal compression needed for 16:9 if you want to leave the lens in place.

Fancy term for "loss of resolution". :D Always try and get a motorized lens if possible.

you dont need an external scaler but without one your choices will be to have the lens on or off with a panamorph depending on the aspect ratio or you get the prismasonic which you can always leave on but most switch from pass to stretch depending on what ratio you want. With the scaler, you can pretty much do anything you want

HiNoah,
Looking at the RS-10 manual on page 28, it looks like if you set the RS-20 at 4:3 screen size it will squeeze the image horizontally. It also appears to add black bars, so you would lose some pixels.

Hi Jerry,
"it looks like if you set the RS-20 at 4:3 screen size it will squeeze the image horizontally."
That would be great, but will it do it w/widescreen material?
There's no getting around losing pixels on the sides if you're showing a 16:9 image on a 2.35 screen.

Yes, we said the same thing.

Wow only $5k more for the Runco? That is hard to pass up.
