I bought the HF11 for $789 last week, after trying the HG21 for about a week.

why? is HF11 much better than HG21 ?
one major concern for me is that HF11 does not have a view finder... :-(

And the lack of a VF can be a major drawback for many. I personally don't see myself buying a camcorder without one. I've got an HG21 coming tomorrow and I plan to compare it to my SR12.

Many moan about the sr 12 low light but as i have said i find mine adequite
even filming in some tourist caves with low lighting i got good footage,i cant afford to change at present but i suspect the latest canons are good but on build quality the sr 12 is a winner.

Flinty, I couldn't agree more. I think for a consumer HD camcorder, the SR12 is actually excellent in low-light.

I'll be doing some comparisons with my SR12 when my HG21 arrives and I'll let you know what I think.

Well I've been testing the HG21 today and I must say I'm very very impressed. There is no question the HG21 is sharper than my SR12. Additionally, I actually prefer the fleshtones a bit over my SR12.

The SR12 presents a somewhat 'creamier' look than the HG21. I will say it still seems the SR12 has a somewhat better dynamic range at times. It almost looks like the SR12 is more 'average weighted' in its light metering and the HG21 is more center-weighted.

I say that because it's much easier to blow out a sky with the HG21 than it is with the SR12. But the flip side of that is the HG21 has a brighter, punchier look to it.

This unit seems significantly better than the HF10 in terms of color.

Ken i am not surprised about the sharpness, but regarding fleshtones my sr12 12 does not have creamy fleshtones though i would say they are very slightly on the red side which i prefer to being too pale,as for the punchier look it would be nice to see comparisons some time, mine being pal may have some differences.

Flinty, if you recall I tried an HF10 and was not impressed, the color just seemed wacky. I also did not find this disparity in sharpness. Yes, I recall the HF10 appeared slightly sharper, but I could see no more true detail. The HG21 appears significantly sharper and does actually have more detail.

When my wife came home, I cradled the SR12 and HG21 together and shot a minute or so of her. I showed her both via an A/B (both HDMI connected). When the HG21 footage came on she said "That's more natural and sharper" (without her knowing which was which).

These are both great cams, but I'm leaning heavily toward the HG21.
