View Full Version : Sub comparable to MFW-15 b-stock-similar price?
fireman325 11-19-08, 11:59 AM I ordered a b-stock MFW-15 and paid $450, and I would later be billed for shipping. Probably another $70-$100. I'm no longer confident they can get it to me in any reasonable amount of time, and am going to ask for a refund. Is there anything else you guys would recommend in the same price range that would give comparable performance? I've been looking at the craigsub list, and it doesn't look promising for what I can afford. Sub would be used in a room about 2800 cubic feet, and most use would be divided between movies, games and TV. Almost no music use. Other equipment will be Klipsch RF-82 towers, an RC-62 center, RS-62 surrounds, an Onkyo 605 receiver, and a Samsung 50" plasma. Thanks.
I forgot to mention that my room is completely open to the kitchen on one side and that more than doubles the overall space. I don't care about sound quality in the kitchen, but this obviously affects acoustics. The sub would be placed in the back corner in the living room away from the kitchen.

The problem is you are really talking about a sub that is now $830 delivered (new).
As an alternative to the B-Stock MFW-15, I would consider this:
http://www.svsound.com/products-sub-cyl-pc12_nsd.cfm
Click on the driver link under "Features". This fourth generation driver is pretty hefty. There is a lot more there including the frequency response.
Right now you save $50 if you pre-order.
Where are you getting this B stock from? I just ordered a New Satin Black one on Monday and it arrives this Friday according to the tracking. I didn't see any ads for a B stock, would have gone that route. Got mine $729 shipped. $599 + 130. If I ordered another one, in same package, second sub would be $499. You just have to ask for this price and they are pretty good at honoring it, instead of $699/each. I think they said it's a Santa special.

You can order B-stock units directly from Mark Schifter. The problem is apparently he allows you to order subs he doesn't have and has no idea when he'll get. I don't have the extra money for an a-stock or that's what I would have gotten to begin with.

I do believe a company can not charge your credit card without an item being in stock. If you want as new sub get the A3-300 from ED http://www.edesignaudio.com/product_info.php?cPath=2_41&products_id=102

You pay by paypal up front. This is one of the subs I was already thinking of as an alternative. The SVS Spyboy mentioned above doesn't look bad either. I'm sure neither will have the output of the MFW-15, but I'm not sure that matters since I can't seem to get one.

Yes
...that would give comparable performance?
Nope.

It'll be really hard to find a sub that will fill a 2800 cubic foot room at high listening levels for only $450+ shipping. Certainly nothing than can hang with the high-sensitivity Klipsch's at reference level. If your usual listening level is a good deal lower than reference, something like the eD A3-300 would probably be your best bet at the $500 price point. You might want to considering saving a little more and waiting a while longer, but again, depending on your listening habits, the A3-300 would probably be just fine.

I was hoping you would chime in. Unfortunately, you said just what I thought you would. I really don't want to "settle" for something that won't perform like I want it to. I might just have to continue to live with my little Onkyo a while longer til I can get something I would be pleased with.

Take it from me, it's much more cost-effective to do things right the first time. Just because you wait and buy something nicer doesn't necessarily mean you won't ever want to upgrade, but it should put it off for much longer. This is my subwoofer story over the past year and a half:
Velodyne VX-10
Upgrade to Infinity PS212
Upgrade to SVS PB10-NSD
Add second SVS PB10-NSD
Upgrade to Epik Castle
Now to be fair, each sub was a decent and enjoyable upgrade over the last. Ultimately, though, it would have been far cheaper to end up with the Castle from the beginning. BTW, I'm not saying that you need something as big as the Castle to be happy. I think my bass needs/wants are higher than those of many others - after all, my Castle is in an 11'x10'x8' room. That said, I think you'll be happier with something in the MFW-15/Epik Knight class than the subs in the $450-500 range.

Agree! First timers hardly ever get it right the first time unless somebody close to them gives then the right advice. So, take it from the guys on the forum. S-t-r-e-t-c-h the $-$-$-$ and get the 600 plus class of sub by Elemental, SVS, Epik, MFW-15, or HSU.

warlord260 11-19-08, 02:17 PM also if you add in the open space to your total cu. feet, as you should.
then even 1 mfw-15 wouldnt be enough for most people on this forum.
you actually need quite a bit of sub to do it right. probably duels i would think.
sorry to tell you this.
Gee, I was happy for 8 years with my first sub. Not that I wouldn't have minded a Velodyne F-1500R! But after reading the December 1995 issue of Video magazine, in which Tom Nousaine tested 11 powered subs, with list prices of up to $1,000, I was able to snag the 2nd place finisher for $378 delivered.
fireman325 11-19-08, 03:59 PM Thanks for all the replies. I contacted AV123 again and am waiting to hear back if regarding whether it's possible and what it would cost to upgrade my order to an a-stock. Once I hear back, I'll take it from there.
I've also considered duals, but unfortunately, I have NOWHERE to put a 2nd one. That's why I tried to jump on a pretty substantial one to begin with.
They definitely have A stock/new (is A stock NEW?). Like I mentioned cost me $599 new plus 130 shipping to CA. I guess depends where you are. It's coming in this Friday. A second sub would be only $499 plus another 130.
Is $450 the lowest the B-stock can get?

B-stock is new, but has a minor cosmetic blemish on it somewhere, which is why they give a discount on it. A lot or people who have them, have posted that they can't find a flaw on it and don't know why it was rated as b-stock. A-stock units are new and unblemished.

Yes, that's the set price for a b-stock unit.
I guess the squeaky wheel really does get oiled. When I called asking for my money back, they started to scramble and make calls to each other, and now I'm going to be shipped a b-stock unit from Colorado, that's actually on the premises. I should have it early to mid next week.
wow. I guess find an A stock and open the box and reseal it and it becomes a B stock, and now you have it coming in. Wished I knew about this before. I have spent too much on myself for this xmas season and nothing for anyone else. I better stop unless I get more money for xmas. Someone always gives me money only because they are too lazy to buy me a gift. Which is fine by me. I'll just buy another sub.
lightguy 01-15-09, 04:25 PM PS; price is now $699 black; (no stock) or + $100 wood. :(
