View Full Version : Sub cable connection?
tonkabilly 11-19-08, 01:21 PM Need some help. Just setting up a new system and have an issue with the sub connection. I bought a Yamaha RXV-663 and need to use my existing speakers until I can get new ones. The problem is that I have a powered JVC sub that has a round connection and the Yamaha uses RCA. Is there an adapter that I can get so that I can use these speakers or am I out of luck.
Hopefully this makes sense. Kinda new to this.
Thanks
The sub is a JVC SP-PWC6 if this helps.
Denophile 11-19-08, 01:28 PM if you dcould take and post a pic of teh round connection it would bhelp--there may be a way but i checked jvcs website and searching that model number nothing came up--cant access teh servic emanual and google images didn't turn up a pic either. need to know more about the 'round' connection
tonkabilly 11-19-08, 01:35 PM Will try and get one for you at lunch. Thanks
sivadselim 11-19-08, 01:59 PM Did this JVC sub come from a HTiB setup, perhaps?
scubie02 11-19-08, 02:22 PM some old ones used those big plugs, like the old mike plus. Can't remember what they were called, but if that's the case then there are adapters where the rca would plug into a larger plug basically, if that's what you mean. There were others that were sort of like the big old phone jacks, not sure wat you'd do then as I am unaware if there was an adapter for that.
tonkabilly 11-19-08, 02:52 PM Ya, I think it is like a mike plug. Here is the manual. Take a look at pg 13.
Just need to know if it is possible to get an adapter and from where.

tonkabilly 11-19-08, 07:50 PM Don't know if I am just not seeing it but I can't see how that plug would work?
It's an RCA to 1/4" adapter. Modern sub preouts use RCA connectors, so if your current sub uses a 1/4" plug you should be all set.

The RCA cable from your avr would plug into the back of this adapter, then the "pointy" end goes into your sub - assuming that this matches the connector type on your sub.
From what I can see, you have an 8 pin S-video type connector from the receiver to the sub. This carries all the speaker channels to the sub and then you use speaker wire from the sub to the satellites. the only way for you to use this sub with a true receiver is to make an adapter. You have to find which two pins are the sub and ground. If you can't figure this out, you're screwed.
I did find a couple funny things in the manual:
Page 8 - Assembling the speaker
Caution, NEVER insert your finger in between the speaker and the base plate as it may get hurt.
Page 19 - Optimizing the speaker settings
1. Take your position where you listen to the sound
2. Press and hold Smart S. setup
3. Clap your hands over your head once.:)
tonkabilly 11-19-08, 09:24 PM Well that just about sums it up> Me be screwed. Not going to mess around with the wire. It is 8-pin on both ends of the cable. Well I quess I will have to buy a sub. Just need to figure out which one. Thanks for all the help.
scubie02 11-20-08, 10:37 AM ahh, sorry, didn't look at the manual--the old ones I had seen and had in mind were the ones with the 1/4" connectors which is the same as the old mike connectors. I'm unaware of an 8 pin adapter, though I guess they could be out there.
scubie02 11-20-08, 10:45 AM i guess if it were really that important to you you could probably take your cable in to an electronics place that knew what they were doing or an electrician and they could probably put an rca plug or plugs on one end...
