Hi. I have an Acer P243w moniter attached through a DVI cable to my computer with a NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GTS video card, and to my PS3 through an HDMI cable.

I'm looking to calibrate it to the best possible settings to display BluRay throught my PS3, and DivX movies and also video games like WoW and TF2 on my PC. Looking for optimal picture quality here.

And I have no idea where to begin. My friend referred me to these forums and since I couldn't find anything through Search, I figured posting would yeild help quickly, so here I am.

Any help would be much appreciated, thank you!

ok first off the PS3 will use video levels when playing a blu-ray or dvd, and the PC will play desktop apps and games in full range. Being a PC monitor the DVI input would need different setting than the HDMI.

So keep in mind that you have to calibrate possibly 4 different ways stuff is displayed.

1st: PC desktop, so apps and web looks ok

check http://www.normankoren.com/makingfineprints1A.html#TestPrint

they have some patterns and images/instructions.

2nd: if divx or video on the pc looks "washed out" it mean is in not using PC levels but video levels, so you will need to either:

A: adjust the brightness down on the display itself everytime you play a video file

B: Use decoder software that expands levels to PC standard so video black matches you settings from step 1

C: don't change anything... watch videos on the PS3

And PC games can be either full range (PC) levels or Video levels that is why games like wow have "brightness" (this is really gamma oftentimes,) to allow you to tweak them so as not to be too dark or too bright.

Mainly you need to adjust birghtness so darks are dark, but not making stuff disappear and contrast to not make whites bleed or be so bright as too blemd fine details into each other

That web site will take care of that part

Now for the PS3 on the hdmi input:

1st: start with the same setting as the DVI, see how stuff looks, if it is too washed out on games lowering the brightness will fix it and it means the HDMI is expecting video levels, which is good since blu-ray, dvd and games can be calibrated for by:

A:Using a "calibration disc" like the THX optimizer, GetGrey, Video essantals, etc.
B:Making a image in photoshop, saving it on memory card, and viewing it on the PS3 to calibrate the picture.

If games from the PS3 look fine but the movies on it look wased out that means that the HDMI port is taking PC levels (since it is a pc monitor) and that is were the PS3 has the BD/DVD playback menu setting for black levels

Its something like this( I don't have a ps3 infront of me at the moment so it might be slightly different)

FROM google
RGB Full mode – HDMI only (PS3 revision 1.8 and higher)Depending on the type of display being used, better colour reproduction for movieplayback may be achieved by utilising RGB Full mode in conjunction with Vantage-HDrather than the usual Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr format type. To enable compatibility do thefollowing:Configure PS3 Settings > BD/DVD Settings > BD/DVD Video Output Format (HDMI) >RGB. Then configure PS3 Settings > Display Settings > RGB Full Range (HDMI) > Full.RGB Full mode extends the PS3 colour output values from a limited 16-235 to the fullrange of 0-255 per colour channel. Many modern 8-bit and newer 10-bit panel LCD andPlasma displays may benefit from the increased colour spread and dynamic range.

Fun when PC monitor are used as TV's and TV's are used as monitors is endless /sarcasm

If you get stumped just post here and I or someone else is sure to help you, good luck.
