View Full Version : Monitor 60's with dual subs
mtw4991 11-21-08, 08:20 PM I just set up Polk Monitor 60's mains with a CS2 center channel. I also scored a second, identical JBL PSW-1000 subwoofer...old school I know, but nice subs! The subs are right next to each of the mains, so any localization should be a moot issue.
The 60's have a lower -3dB limit of 48Hz, the center is 60Hz and the subs go down to 30Hz. The crossover frequency of the subs can be set from 90-150.
My receiver is a yamaha 663 with independant bass management setting of 40,60,80,90,110,120,160,200. Before I ran YPAO I set the subs xo dial to 150and after YPAO the 663 set the mains as large with a crossover of 160. I reset the mains as small and am playing with xo settings between 80-160. At the lower end of 80, bass seems "weak" and at 160 it sounds almost too strong. Anything less than 60Hz and I "lose" the sub. When I set the xo to 120the bass sounds deep and rumbling, but not too "punchy" or "strong".
Am I on the right track here? Any opinions/education would be greatly appreciated. THANKS!
Note my room is huge...22wx32lx14h, but the HT is set up in only 1/2 of it. Pool table in the other 1/2.
shelly40 11-21-08, 08:49 PM Well.... like you said....
it's a huge room.....
over 9800 cubic feet...
The subs are trying to fill the whole room....
They don't know the theater is only half the room....
Maybe you need a bigger sub..... or 2....

Pool table in the other 1/2.You didn't say what your surround speakers' low-end capability was, but the standard SMALL speaker 80Hz AVR xover would be very appropriate for your fronts and center. Definitely no reason to go higher than 80Hz. But since YPAO set your xover to 160Hz (which is very high), maybe your surrounds are very SMALL. Set the subs' xovers as high as possible (which you did) or bypass them if those subs allow that. If you can force the speakers to SMALL w/80Hz xover and then run YPAO with those settings, do that.
How are you adjusting the 2 subs' own, independent levels?
Do you have an SPL meter? Calibration DVD?

The surrounds are small Infinity Minuette MPS's with a low end xo of 200Hz which is very high, I realize. I think the line level input MAY bypass the subs xo, but I'm not sure. The subs are JBL PSW-1000, -3dB 30Hz low end.
If I set all the speakers to small (which I did after running YPAO the first time), won't YPAO just reset them to large? Or will it run them as small and reset xo for them?
I'm setting both of the subs volume control knobs at the 75% mark for both, but will rerun at 50%. I don't have a SPL, but do have DVE HD Basics BD and THX Optimizer disks...?
