Hey all,

I'm in the market for a computer sound system to replace my damaged and unusable Logitech Z-2300 system. I recently got the M-Audio AV 40, which I absolutely love, and now it's time to add some bass. Based off of research, I went ahead and bought the massive Dayton SUB-100, but with it sitting next to me right now I have to say that I'm not too satisfied. It seems to be quite rumbly and produces too much boom for my small 10x10x8 room with wood flooring.

With that said, what other subs would you consider for my application? I know it's been said that you get what you pay for, but I was thoroughly satisfied with the Z-2300 system which goes for around $100, so it shouldn't be too difficult. I'm looking for clean, tight bass more than anything. I mostly listen to music with the occasional gaming session here and there. My ideal budget would be sub-$200 shipped.

I've been looking at the Velodyne VX-10 and TSC ASW-8.

Also, is there anything out there that would give me the convenience of the Logitech Z-2300's volume/bass knob? I don't like the idea of having to get down and under my desk everytime I have to adust bass levels. Check out the pic below:

Before you go and buy anything else maybe you should play around with the various placement options and calibrate it. If you have it calibrated correctly it shouldn't make too much bass for your room. Any subwoofer can sound bad given the right circumstances.

I've messed with it. I think it has more to do with the size of the driver than anything. It seems to be creating more of a "hum" than the "thump" that I'm looking for. I see how this would help with movies, but when it comes to games and music I'd definately favor a different kind of sound. I'm looking for something more "live stage" than theatrical.

I'm not a pro by any means, but I have a decent sound system in my car so I have an idea of what I'm looking for. I guess the best thing to do would be to demo subs myself, but I know a store wouldn't do justice to how a respective sub would sound in my room.

The Logitech had an 8" driver, so I guess going for that size would give me similar results.

An 8" will have too much midbass (will sound boomy), while most cheap 12"s lack the accuracy, and they will "hum" like you said. I think your best bet is a 10" sub, but don't ask me about brands, all i know is cheap drivers and DIY. :p

tSc ASW-10. It's currently going for $100. It looks like a rebadged Energy ESW-10.

Thanks for the replies guys. I'm leaning towards the ASW-10 now. I'll look into it more.

What about the Infinity PS-28 or Klipsch KSW-10? Would these subs be better performers than the ones already mentioned? A friend of mine says he could get pretty good deals on them, but unfortunately there's really no way to audition them..
