View Full Version : HDMI Audio
Teundusia 11-23-08, 02:26 PM I'm having trouble getting audio from my XBox 360 through the TV. Now I know it isn't anything to do with my TV or the cable, as it worked fine with my friend's PS3, it even popped up with an option when he turned it on asking if we wanted audio through the HDMI or through an external sound device.
Does anyone have any idea what is wrong and how I can fix the problem? I want the HDMI picture without having to shell out over thirty quid for XBox's official HDMI thing with the sound adaptor.
whityfrd 11-23-08, 02:50 PM the only way to get sound through the tv is to use the adaptor or what some have done. pop off the plastic overing on the male end of the av input. if your like me, and have a reciever that has hdmi compatibility, you dont have to worry about all that mess.

What? The TV should produce audio no problem when using HDMI. Even if he is running HDMI to the TV and then optical to his AVR he should still get 2 ch sound. It sounds like he is having a handshake issue of some sort if he is getting no audio at all.
whityfrd 11-23-08, 03:20 PM theoretically you are correct. in a real world issue, its impossible to plug in the hdmi input and the 360's av input for opcital sound at the same time. the av plug is too bulky. thats why microsoft sells a less bulky adapter to accomplish this. its been known that you can easily pop off the plastic sheathing on the av plug to avoid having to pay for an adapter. thats all im sayin.
Teundusia 11-23-08, 06:39 PM I tried popping off the covering, but even after that I couldn't get both the HDMI and AV thing in at once.
The thing is, I want to just plug my 360 directly to the TV, the TV giving both video and audio. No fancy sound system connected, as I don't have one. It just seems weird a PS3 did it absolutely fine, but my 360 is incapable of doing it.
Does it matter that my XBox has not been updated for quite a while? I have it in my room which is too far from my house's router to connect to it, and when I shell out 60 quid for a wireless adaptor is the day Nintendo start a snow shoveling business in hell. While I'm on the subject, does anyone know how to use other wireless adaptors with it, specifically a Belkin Wireless G+ MIMO adaptor?

You can't use 3rd party USB wifi adapters at all, however you can use any type of ethernet adapter.

There is no real reason that it shouldn't work. Yours is the first I have seen that would not produce any audio at all. Call MS I suppose, even though they will have little to no idea what you are talking about. Also, make sure your TV is turned on first, then turn on the Xbox, this should ensure a good HDMI handshake.
M-Desantos 11-24-08, 05:32 AM Isn't there a setting in the Xbox for choosing which port you want the audio out?

Not what I can see unfortunately. All I get is dolby digital stereo, dolby digital 5.1 and some other thing, and all three don't have any sound. I have just noticed something though. I only have options for digital sound, yet it says I need a 360 component HD, Advanced SCART, S-Video or VGA HD AV cable for it. I don't understand why I don't get any options for audio through the HDMI cable.
I'm gonna try updating my console, see if it helps anything.
formulanerd 11-24-08, 12:17 PM HDMI audio isn't officially supported on the 360, so i guess technically it doesn't have to work, though many people haven't had any problems with it.

thats because you cant update hardware with a download. true hd sound will never be on the 360, unless they come out with yet another sku. which i would not buy.
Bryenth 11-29-08, 01:20 PM I had a similar problem when connecting my 360. I had to change the output to 1080 and it worked afer that.

I had the same problem (no audio over HDMI). After changing output to 1080, everything was OK. Thanks Bryenth.

I don't know about that.... when dealing with movies anyways.
I mean the 360 can take take HD tracks/higher bitrate tracks and reencode them to DTS.
On a movie its all digital and getting passed on to the reciver right?
So shouldn't a 360 in thoery playing a HD track on a HD DVD be able to output that as DD Tru HD etc or a DTS 24/96 track?
And futhermore in games as well if they could dedicate the processing power to render game audio (assuming it was HD on the disc) in HD audio format.
I mean really with everything digital its matter of having enough power to process the codec/wrapper/ and having the software to make the hardware understand the coding of sound/video/picture/etc and then use hardware to output the decode meduim. Or am I wrong?
