I got this game for my Daughter and Wife on Friday. What a dissapointment! Here is a quick list of pro's and con's...

GOOD:

1. The song list is great for those who love top 40 radio and pop in general, and they are all masters. It's not my kind of stuff, but it's great for who I got it for.

2. The wireless, motion sensitive mics are cool (when they work properly).

3. I like the option to have the original music video (when available) playing behind the lyric scroll.

4. The game modes are kind of cool.

BAD:

1. The Mics sync weird, even though the instruction manual says they take quadrants on the ring, they don't, so you never know if you have done it properly or not until you are in a song, and it took a while to even figure out HOW to sync them up.

2. The Mics sometimes loose sync for no reason, and sometimes stay active long after the 360 has been shut down. Like last night, I noticed one of them blinking about 4 hours after the 360 had been turned off.

3. I downloaded all available DLC (5 songs) for this game only to not be able to find the new songs in the list. Supposedly, there is a way to get them to show up that I haven't tried yet and that proceedure is highly unintuitive. Shouldn't DLC just show up in the game like every other game?

4. Mic lag. There is a major problem with voice lagging behind the music and there are no controls to adjust this in the game. There is a control that controls lyric scroll speed vs. music but this does nothing for the mic lagging.

5. While in the menus, and in between song previews, there is very annoying muzak playing. You can't turn it off, or even turn it down to a less irritating level.

6. The "feature" to let you use your own DRM free music just plain sucks.

All in all, this is a game that had/has major potential but it is severely crippled by the six items above. If it wern't for my Daughter loving the song list and the potential for some of the thing being able to be fixed by updates I would have taken this crap back where I got it right away.

Thanks for the review. I was thinking of picking this up as a party game, to compliment Scene-It, but maybe I will wait....

I just saw the sales data for this game. They only sold one copy so it looks like you are the only one to have bought it. The company personally thanks you for the support.

Thanks for the info , my wife wants this game but I think we'll be waiting as well .

Is it possible to use the Xbox 360 headset or a usb mic with Lips to avoid the disconnect of the Lips mic's ?

I haven't tried any other mics, but I will tonight and report back. The mic doesn't cut out during the game, it just looses sync sometimes between sessions, and sometimes it doesn't.

Also, I was hoping I could use one of these mics with Rock Band, but it doesn't work as of yet. It could in the future if the RB guys choose to do it though.

How does it work with custom music? Can it download lyrics or let you enter the lyrics?

I'll still get it, much better music selection than SingStar. But I plan on getting a Wii and 60 GB hard drive for my 360 first before I buy any more games.

There is no way to get lyrics into the game, and you can make any noise you want to score points with the custom music... no way for it to know if you are singing it correctly or not. It's a total let down as far as that goes. It did connect right into my PC though and I was able to add any mp3 from it to a playlist.

Are the added music files available elsewhere in the 360?
Like the media player app?

Those files are one and the same. If you can play it in the 360 media player, you can use it in Lips.

So, I was asked by my GF if there are any 360 games I have that can be enjoyed by two 10 year old girls because my GF's friend and daughters are coming by for Thanksgiving. I walked over to my game case and said:

War/War/Violence but not War/Wrestling/War/War/Future War (Gears2 haha)/WAR and Mercenary War.

I said, probabaly not. So she said what about some to buy. I thought hey LIPS. Now you have just depressed me about my gaming options as host. I can't deal with SYNC issues. :p

Anyone read any professional official reviews on this title. Not to knock the original poster.. but I'd be interested in this game and need more information to trust than just "some random guy on the internet".

Shyt I think its the perfect title to use when entertaining drunk females at my cribbo. Would really love to pick it up.

I bought it based on reviews. Some good, some bad. I'm pretty lenient compared to some other random guys and it stills manages to dissapoint.

There are tons of great games for that age group.

1 Any lego game (Star Wars, indy, batman)
2. Viva Pinata part 1, part 2, and Party Animals
3. Almost any game remake of Movie (Shrek, Surfs Up, Ratatouille, Open Season, Sonic, etc, etc, there must be at least 20-30).
4. Any of the Rhythm games (GH II, III, RB)
5. Have them make Avatars for your gamertag
6. There are probably many arcade games

Check out the ESA holiday bundles. Last year they had Open Season, Cars, Fusion Frenzy 2 (you can still get for $30), and this year it is called the childrens miricle network pack and has Sonic, Shrek, and Viva Pinata Party Animals for $30. These are great deal for kids, and for $10 a game, can't go wrong.

Yeah, we have are you smarter than a 5th grader as option number one. the rhythm games was an idea I had, but for one day the cost benefit analysis failed. I thought lips would be an easy addon. Plus, GF could get achievements for me :p

We shall see.

The Eurogamer review is pretty funny. You can drag the mic on the carpet and beat anyone who tries to sing. Sounds broken.

Sorry to harp on it, but you did try using LIPS to copy files to the HDD and *then* played them with the dashboard media player off the 360 HDD? I'm not surprised to see LIPS accessing music you rip on the 360, but being able to copy music ripped outside the 360 and have it show up in the Media Player is...interesting...
The reason I harp on it is because it would allow LIPS to be used to copy an entire music collection into the 360. A feature many have asked for that is not available otherwise.
I'd be tempted to buy Lips just for that alone...

You misunderstand, it streams from the PC, or a PMP like the Zune.

So it doesn't copy them?
At the intro press conference they said it *copied* them to your drive.

My wife bought the game and she loves it. There are a few issues and things I think they could have done better, but she loves singing the songs. I think its fun also, but I'm not into singing much. My 5 year old nephew likes it. Sure he can't read the words, but he starts to memorize the lyrics when singing with the wife. I haven't had any mic sync issues and I think the mics are great. I am hoping and praying they will get a patch so I can use them with RB. I only had 1 issue at first and the game was skipping when singing, but that was because I had my RB mic plugged in. Once unplugged, the game was fine.

You can stream all the DRM-Less songs from your PC. You have to add them to the sing list to get them to show up. I think you do the same thing with the DLC songs, but some are saying you re-download them in the game and it will ask if you want to save it to lips. I haven't tried any DLC yet. Kinda dumb and very confusing, but that's the way they did it.

I hate that you can only see just over 5,000 songs, so since I have just over 20,000 songs, it get a fraction to choose from. I will really need to get a new hard drive, so then I can just copy what I want on to it. They really need to fix this. Playing your songs are fun, You just don't have any lyrics to read. The wife is great a memorizing songs, so she loves it. I just put the songs on my IPhone and read the lyrics there when singing.

Over all I think the game is fun, but they should not have released it yet. It has a not done feeling to it. There are to many confusing things about the game. I actually had to read the manual several times, just to figure out things. They should have delayed it and made it better. I would still say buy it, if you like games like this, because overall, its pretty fun........

So far, there has been no problems with either mic on this game for me.
I really like this game. The selections are great as well. Can't wait to start downloading songs. You can even hook up your mp3 ( or Zune) and use your own song choices, with out the lyrics.

Are the songs originals or cover bands (or a mixture) ?

I would like to get this for my wife (I know she wants this for Xmas) but I am hesitant to drop $70+tax if it has issues .

Thanks ,

All originals and most have the original video playable as the background. I like karaoke, so I enjoyed it. I am not a great singer... or even good, but I liked this better than the American Idol karaoke game. This game is more about fun where American Idol is more about getting the songs right.

Not having lyrics for streaming songs stinks, but at least you can play them. You can also play with the settings to dial down the vocals in the streamed songs.

As far as the elevator music in the background while selecting a song, you can change the theme. That changes the music. When the game starts up, go to the options and change the theme. Most of the background music isn't that much better, but it's tolerable.

Sorry to bump a really old thread, but I just got this game for my kids recently as a Xmas present. I have a 6 year old, and a 9 year old, and thought they would both get a kick out of it. Finding the game for a decent price was an adventure in itself. I wanted to get the original Lips bundle, because it came with 2 mics. Unfortunately, none of the stores are selling it any more. They have a new bundle, called "Lips No.1 Hits" or something like that. It comes with one mic. On Ebay, the original goes for big bucks, especially if you want a brand new package.

I ended up finding it on Craigslist in the state of Washington (I'm in California). A guy had it brand new, and was selling it for $25. He had a phone number on there, and I called him up and talked to him for a bit and tried to see if he could ship it to me prior to Xmas, and I could just paypal him for it. He was really cool about it, and agreed. My wife thought I was a fool, thinking we would never receive anything from him, but sure enough, a day before Xmas it arrived. I had to pay $15 extra to get it shipped in time, but that was no biggie.

Anyways, we've had the game for a week now, and the kids love it, and so does the wife. In fact, I think my wife likes it even more. I even tried it out myself, and I've never, ever, done any karaoke.

I haven't got the new version yet, ("Lips No.1 Hits"), but one thing that kinda dissapoints me about this game and the sequel is the small number of songs. Maybe I'm crazy for thinking it, but it seems like it should have double the number of songs. I know they want to sell them to you via DLC, but 40 songs? Out of the 40 they are offering, there are probably only 10 I'd like to sing.

My wife perfers this over singstar anyday since it has much better song selection. We havent touched Singstar since we got it a few months ago. Only thing I dont like is how it shows your pitch. I prefer singstars any day.

Song add-ons and DLC seem to be okay. I have both the original and No 1 hits. What is dumb though is if you're playing No1 hits and want to sing a song from the original you have to swap discs which is a PITA. They should let you install the OG to the HD and then you could have the best of both. The new version does have more familiar and popular titles since all the songs included made it to #1. (Hense the title.)
