I recently bought a 50" Panasonic PV80 and am extremely happy with it.

One thing I do notice is that sometimes after turning the TV off, the last image that was on the TV remains for a few minutes - even if the image wasn't displayed for very long when the TV was on.

For instance, I just watched a DVD, pressed stop which brought up the "Pioneer" logo of the DVD player, and a immediately after I turned off the TV - and the Pioneer logo was faintly on the TV. It took between 3-5 minutes for it to disappear. I've also witnessed this with the TV input box, if the last thing I did was switch inputs before turning off.

Anyway, I understood that Panasonic and Pioneer were very good at preventing IR and burn-in and am concerned I got a faulty TV. At the same time, since the image disappears so fast and is of the last thing that was displayed on the TV, not something that was displayed on the TV for a prolonged time, it also seems like it could be normal - especially for the first 100 hours.

Any advice? If it is faulty, I'd rather return it now than later since I recently bought it...
Thanks...

Hehe...I did this to myself too when I first got my Pioneer plasma a couple years ago. That is not IR, it is just excited phosphors that are taking a little while to discharge, and perfectly normal. Think of it as a person walking along the beach, leaving footprints, which the waves come and wash away a few seconds later.

Well, if it takes 3 to 5 minutes to go away it's image retention. It's just mild and should happen less often the more you use your plasma.

His comments are it goes away with switching inputs (a blank screen), that is not image retention. It is excited phosphors charging over time. Image retention is the uneven wearing of the phosphors, which will only be balanced out by further cycling the other phosphors to catch them up with the ones that are the culprit for IR.
