So I bought a standard (Fry's special) tilting mount for my 47" Westinghouse LCD. I got my stud finder and found that there are 3 studs above my fireplace, one in the middle, two on the sides. The two on the sides are too far apart for the mount I bought, and are almost too wide for the TV to cover a mount if I got one that wide (The centers of the studs are 42.5 in apart). Should I look for a new mount that is that wide? Should I mount to just the center stud (will probably have to get a new mount)? Should I call in backup and pay an electrician/installer?

The TV is 60-70lbs. It's a TX-series Westinghouse (forget the exact model).

Any advice is appreciated.

FYI, the ONLY option is to do a fireplace mount, unfortunately.

I had a similar problem, and I just opened up the wall and attached some 2x4's horizontally between the existing studs, then attached my mount to those. Been up for 2.5 years without any problems. Just use some high quality screws to attach the studs.
