why does my Toshiba 30HF85 intermittently do this?

it's like doubling the picture and it's flashing really fast while doing it. so fast that when i tried to take a picture of it i had to use a long shutter speed to even catch it. it doesn't do it all the time. just now and then. does it both on cable tv and on the PS3. never did it until i got the PS3 though, so i don't know what that means. could just be a coincidence.

everything goes through my receiver using component cables (no HDMI anywhere), so i guess it could possibly even be the receiver doing it.

it doesn't really bother me much. cause all i have to do it just change in input signal and then go back and it always fixes it. but if its the TV itself and its on its way out that kinda stinks.

what do you pros think?

Does it do it without the receiver in the circuit?

not sure. everything runs through the receiver. always has, always will.

That would be my first troubleshooting step. PS3 to TV, if still does it, regular DVD straight to same input on TV, if still, try different Component Video input on TV if possible. (I clicked on your system pictures, nice RTA curves, must sound great!)

Looks like a flaky cable to me. Try direct input as mentioned above.

i guess it could be the cable from the receiver to the tv doing it, or the input on the tv itself. i have one more input on the tv i could try instead. it wouldn't make sense for it to be the cable from the cable box to the receiver or the one from the ps3 to the receiver because it does it on both sources.

i'll try to troubleshooting. i was just more concerned with it maybe being the tv on its way out. which would stink cause i have no money to buy a new one right now. so i hope it's alright.

ok, i'll try those options.

and yes the system does sound pretty nice. not quite enough sub for select movies, but overall it gets the job done. :)

You see things like this on pixel-based displays that are trying to show something that's just outside sync range. Not far enough out of range to trigger the "out of range" message.

That may not be what's happening here, but I've seen it happen with custom rezzes on a PC and a Momitsu DVD player.

Yes it does look like a sync error but i think it's caused by the cable.

can cables just go bad over time? i haven't touched anything, nothing has been moved or switched.

it only makes sense that it might be the cable between the receiver and the tv since it does it on both of the sources that go into the receiver. but that cable hasn't been touch, nothing has moved an inch. i guess i could try to snug up the connections and see if maybe something wiggled itself loose from vibrations and such. it seems to be doing it less and less lately. when i first hooked the ps3 up it was doing it pretty often. the whole thing just seems kinda weird and flakey.

They don't "just" go bad, but there are a lot of reasons why a cable can break, and most of them are unexplainable on spot. :p It happens often to figure out why the cable broke months after you replaced it.
