Hi, So i just bought a LCD tv (Samsung LN40A630), PS3 (80g), and HDPVR. I had ordered some hdmi cables off the net, but since they had not arrived I borrowed an hdmi 1.3 cable for my ps3. Everything was working great!
I finally received my 2 new HDMI (1.3a) cables, and hooked them up. They work fine when hooked up to my HDPVR, but I get "no signal" when I have either of them hooked up to my PS3.
So my question, Why would the HDMI 1.3 cable work great with my ps3, but the new 1.3a cables not work at all? At first I thought it was faulty cables, but they work with the HDPVR, and my TV.
Because of this, I am thinking that there is a compatibility issue with the PS3.
The cables were cheap, but they have the fehrite cores and are gold plated or watever, if that makes any difference whatsoever. ANY help would be much appreciated (even a sony support # that would let me talk to a real human would help) Thanks,

there's really no difference between an HDMI cable of any version...they're the same cable.
it sounds to me like the cable is doing fine passing 1080i/720p, but when you ask it to do a higher data rate like 1080p it is choking.
The gold plated connectors don't matter...optimal would be if the connector was the same metal as the CE device connector. Ferrite cores don't either. What's important in HDMI is construction quality...namely that the guage of wire be sufficient and all wires be as close as possible to the same length.
I'd suggest monoprice.com for the cables. Theirs are cheap, but work just about every time.
To reset the display, with the PS3 power light as RED, hold down the power button until it beeps TWICE. That may get you up and running.

Thanks alot for the info. I think I will return the cables if I can and look at buying them off on monoprice since I keep hearing that name thrown around on these forums.
Just for my clarity, what you are saying is that a smaller gauge wire will have a harder time playing 1080p/ higher resolutions than a thicker gauge wire? Is that the most common difference between a $15 cable and a $90+ cable?
And, what gauge is ideal or most common for my purpose (PS3/HDPVR ---> LCD TV)?
Thanks again

It depends on the length of your cable run. I can pass 1080p just fine with Monoprice's 28AWG HDMI cable over 12 feet but over 30 feet I'd probably need a thicker gauge cable. How long are the cable's you're using? Also if you're paying $90 for a cable, you're doing it wrong.

Haha, the reason I'm on here is because i thought a $90 cable is ridiculous and wanted to get some facts straight. I'm only running a short distance (probably 6 ft) and from what I've been reading it doesn't really matter what gauge at that length.
I just purchased the 24 AWG 10 ft cables off of Monoprice.
I went with the 24 AWG because I'm pretty sure my last cables (that I'm returning) are more like 28 AWG with the ferrite cores. I figure I'd try the thicker wire instead of going with something I already had.

Those should work fine. I mistyped that last post, I'm using 28AWG cables with the ferrite cores. 22AWG would be used for a much longer run. 24AWG will be more than enough for a 6ft run.

Try holding down the power button for 10 seconds to get the optimal settings.

Just an update...I received the new HDMI's from monoprice. Not only did they work great, but they are also look like much higher quality than ones I've seen for $150 in stores. Same with the optical cable I just received from them.
Thanks for the input, Monoprice will definitely be seeing more orders from me.
