Hello all,
I've been trying for the past few weeks to hook up my Phillips DVDRecorder 3400 to my TV, with no luck whatsoever.
The TV I'm hooking it up to is an JVC TV D-Series, RM-C252. I'd like to record some VHS tapes onto DVD with the DVDRecorder.
The VHS machine I'm using is broksonic VHS, but I imagine any VHS could be hooked up the same way. Correct me if I'm wrong.
The way I have it set up now is, the VCR plays when I have the input from the TV on Channel 4 and I've tried to switch it so that the DVD recorder would read it. No luck.
What is it that I'm doing wrong? Are the things hooked up wrong? Is a button incorrectly pressed? Please help me through this step by step, even if it seems to be most obvious. I've been at this for weeks and I'm about ready to chuck the thing out the window.
Thanks in advance!
Ed
What type of inputs does your TV have, that is does it have composite or S-video inputs and how many of each?

Thanks for the quick reply. OK, forgive the crudeness of my response here, but I'll do my best.
At the back of the TV, there is an AUDIO OUT where white and red prongs are supposed to go in.
On the side is INPUT S VIDEO where a black cord with a weird 5 hole or so prong is supposed to go in. Underneath it are holes for yellow, white and red prongs.
On the right side of this is COMPONENT VIDEO where it reads VIDEO Y. There are holes for white and red prongs and there are holes for green, blue and red prongs.
In front of the TV is a VIDEO 3 where red, white and yellow prongs are supposed to go in. I've tried using that a few times, for ease of access if nothing else, with no luck.
I hope this answers your question and is of help to you. Sorry but I'm not techno-savvy so again, forgive the crudeness of my descriptions.
Honest, I've been at this for so long. If you can help me out with this set-up, I'll kiss your feet!
Thanks in advance...
Ed
I would take a yellow composite cable and run it from your VCR video out and hook it to your DVDRs video input. Also run a red and white audio cable from your VCRs audio out and hook it to your DVDRs audio input.
Next I personally would hook your DVDR to your TV with a component video cable (green, blue and red) and also matching stereo audio. That is component video and audio out of your DVDR to your TV's component input.
If you didn't have a component cable you could use a yellow, white and red cable instead of the correctly color coded cable. The correct cable is best but in a pinch I'll do that. If you have a S-video cable you could also just use that cable and audio going from your DVDR to TV, or last resort would be a yellow composite cable and audio cables.
As far as RF cables go you could run your antenna or cable feed first to your VCR RF in. Then take the VCRs RF out and run it to your DVDRs RF in, then finally take your DVDRs RF out and run that to your TV.
To watch TV make sure to turn your VCR off or at least turn the RF modulator off with the TV/VCR button. Then just tune on your TV.
To watch a VHS just turn your VHS on and either watch on your TV on channel 3 or 4 or another method I'll mention below.
To record from VHS to DVD (assuming the tape is not a copy protected commercial tape) turn on your VHS and DVDR. On your DVDR select the line input you've hooked your VCR to. On your TV select component input(or whatever input you've hooked your DVDR to your TV). Then push play on your VCR and record on your DVDR.
The other method for watching a VHS tape would to do the same method as just described but just don't push record on your DVDR. In other words you'd need to also have your DVDR on. I'd do whatever method gives you a better picture.
Note if you're using component cables from your DVDR to TV you may need to set things such as progressive scan or some DVD players and I might think some players need to be told in the setup what type of component output your want. I recently hooked up a player that I had to go into the setup and tell it I was using component out(it defaulted to S-video/composite and would only output one or the other, not both component and S-video/composite at the same time). I'm not sure if any DVDRs do this but I though I'd mention it anyway so you wouldn't be caught off guard if you didn't get anything out of your component outputs on your DVDR.

Thanks Jjeff. I will give what you wrote a try.
Wish me luck.
Can I call on you again if I run into more trouble?
Take care and thanks again!
