View Full Version : Watch High Def TV 95% of the time- LCD or Plasma for me?
I watch High Def cable TV 95% of the time. I have been interested in getting a plasma but I'm wondering which technology is more conducive to this type of viewing. We rarely watch movies and do not yet own a blu-ray. Is LCD a better choice for HD Cable television or is there not a distinction between watching movies and watching HDTV?
Thanks for any help!

what type of content do you watch? Fast moving sporting events? or HGTV? if you are watching basic TV, either will suite your needs. If you are watching anything with a moderate to significant amount of motion, hands down plasma.
80% of the time is typical prime time HD television shows, as well as HD news. The rest of the time, MLB baseball and Formula1 racing, all in HD. I think there is but a single half hour program I watch in standard def.
Thank you.

my preference is towards plasma displays in a general sense. There are LCD panels that are better than certain plasma displays, but overall, plasma is still my choice for picture quality.
I don't know what your budget is, but you cannot go wrong with the 9G Kuros from pioneer

found a good generalized quote from another thread:
Its alot more complicated that just LCD vs Plasma.
9 times out of ten I would say go with plasma because it performs better in just about every aspect. Especially the Pioneer plasmas and a few of the Panasonic plasmas.
BUT
If I had to choose a Samsung 950 LCD/Sony XBR8 LCD, and a Samsung Plasma, I dont know if I would go with the sammy plasma. I would have to really consider the 950 and the XBR8.
I am reading some great experiences with the 950 and a few with the XBR8.
But the motion issues and off angle viewing isssues turn me away from LCD.
I don't always sit dead center and I watch/play alot of movies/games with fast moving motion. So I would have some issues. And after having a plasma that performs great with motion, I refuse to use interpolation. I can spot it right off and I dislike the effect.

Assuming that it is the sky may be a waste of everybody's time. "I need a TV" - says somebody and the predictable "Buy Kuro" comes back in each and every case.
To prevent this, here is a new rule for the enlightened ones: By default, unless the asker says otherwise, you will use the figure of $2000 for the whole thing, tax and delivery included.

OK, I have seen 50" kuros for slightly more than 2 grand when you factor in tax, so go for that.
Under 2 grand, look at the 800u and 850u panels from panasonic.... even the 80 and 85u aren't bad
All that said, everyone's budget is different and 2 grand might be what they spend on cables for their setup ;)
$4,000 before tax/delivery. And I had been favoring the Kuros

if you have that kind of dough to spend, definitely get a 60" kuro

What is the recommended viewing distance for 60"? I am at ~10feet in my location
