I need a way to output both optical audio, for my 5.1 system, and composite audio, for my headphone amp, from my 360 with a Monoprice HDMI cable connected. I've already mutilated my OEM component cables as an optical adapter so I can't use that anymore now that I need a composite option. I refuse to pay MS $50 for their "official" HDMI cable with the audio dongle.
So, I was thinking I'd buy a Monoprice Component/Composite cable that way I'd have both the optical and composite options. I understand I'd need to cut a 1/2 inch notch in the top of it though to get the HDMI cable to fit and it appears the SD/HD switch gets in the way of that. Would I still be able to do this? If not could I do the same thing with Monoprice's VGA cable since there's no switch in the way?
If you're curious why my first inclination is to go for the component/composite cable over the VGA cable despite the fact that I won't be using either for video it's because I thought it might be nice to have the composite connection available should I ever have to connect to an SDTV.
