I plan on building a curved 2.40:1 screen in the next few days. Previously, I have been using the zooming method to get my CIH on my old screen, but I do have a scaler that I intend to use once I get a lense. So, my question is what will happen to the image I am projecting if I build a curved screen but don't have a lense? Just incase it helps, I plan on using a CIH of 36 inches and a throw from the front of the projector to the screen of 14 ft.
Your images will "barrel". I would wait until you get a lens so that you can see just how much curve you actually need to correct the pincushion. What you are doing by curving the screen is adding correction for a probem that does not currently exist...

As Mark said, you will have barrel distortion without the lens. However, if the curve is modest, the barrel distortion will be minor. I'm at a short throw so had to curve the screen. I split the difference between pincushion and barrel distortion by curving the screen to a depth of about 75% of what I actually needed to correct the problem.

So, if I understand you correctly, if you were to use the zoom method to get a 2.40:1 image, then a curved screen is not necessary and would actually add distortion. Is that correct?

Correct :)
