I've been having some issues with my Sci-Atl explorer 8300HD. Ever since our cable company has upgraded the firmware we have been having some strange issues with the DVR. As of right now we cannot turn off our television if a program is paused, if we do the DVR loses its place in the timeshift. This is a new issue and we have been always able to turn off the plasma (to save electricity and to avoid burn-in) but now we are totally unable to turn off the tv at all when live tv is paused. We have called Cablevision and have even had a new box installed by a tech, after he tried to solve the error and could not he claimed that "we must have never been able to turn the tv off without losing the timeshift" which are 100% sure is not true.

Do you have any insight to this problem?

Any advice/comments would be much appreciated, since Cablevision is no help.

turn off your TV and not your DVR - however, the SA8300s will only stay paused for 1 hour and never have stayed paused for longer than that.

Thanks, yes I know about the 1 hour for time shifted live pause.

We don't turn off the DVR, thats the problem. In the past we could pause a show and turn off the tv, then go do whatever has drawn us away from the tv.

Currently, If you pause something and turn off the tv the DVR stays on but it basically un-pauses the show and it goes live (no pause). Its very strange.

In order for the show to stay paused you MUST leave the tv on.

This all started with the new firmware upgrade about a month and a half ago. We've had cablevision replace the DVR and had a repair guy come out only to tell us we were never able to turn off a paused show without it going live again, which is totally not true.

just a guess but if you use hdmi check your tv's settings for hdmi/power control for external devices, if your tv has it try disabling that function.

Any advice/comments would be much appreciated, since Cablevision is no help. This behavior may be new to you, but it's normal with some HDMI setups. My Mom's setup works that way.

Why is this important to you? The timeshift buffer only covers the last hour. Do you just want the ability to walk into the room, turn on the TV, and rewind to the beginning of the program that's currently running? If so, swap the HDMI for component cables and you'll be able to do that.

If instead you're interested in preserving the current program, just hit the record button before you turn off the TV.

I would not expect that complaining to your cableco will do much.
