Playstation Blog.
have a distinct feeling that many of you might have been expecting that this day would be coming real soon … Today, we’re beginning to reveal more about our next project here at Naughty Dog – Uncharted 2: Among Thieves.
Surprised, right?
You can catch the first glimpse of our next game on GameTrailers.com, which is hosting a video we’ve put together advertising the 2008 Video Game Awards on Spike. Our VGA ad will also premiere on the air tomorrow, Tuesday, December 2, at 9:25 PM during UFC Unleashed on Spike. Oh yeah, that means we have something much bigger lined up …
The world premiere of our first trailer for Uncharted 2: Among Thieves!
This trailer will be shown during the 2008 Video Game Awards show, airing on December 14, 2009, at 9:00 PM on Spike. Don’t forget!

I guess that means Tibet is our location.
Was the first one pretty good or something?
I think 90% of the members would say that :)
Krelic.
Megalith 12-01-08, 07:18 PM I honestly don't care, as long as Greg Edmondson returns.

briankmonkey 12-01-08, 07:21 PM Two words: Jet pack.
They never did release that DLC  I wanted to fly all over the waterfall with my rocket launcher and then up coast :D

No ****? I'm buying it tomorrow.
Vizion47 12-01-08, 07:24 PM Or, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phurba
I guess that means Tibet is our location.
Supposedly the story involves treasures related to Marco Polo somehow, so Tibet or China would make a good guess for a location.
bassmonkeee 12-01-08, 07:25 PM So, you don't suppose he's going to be related to Marco Polo, too, do ya?
Woah!!
The first game came out in Fall 2007 and IS STILL THE BEST LOOKING GAME ON PS3!
now with the sequel I don't expect a huge jump in graphics, so from the descriptions it
looks like ND heard the negatives about the gameplay( too much shooting/too repetitive) and are focusing on that aspect to match the mind blowing visuals with mind blowing gameplay.
Two words: Jet pack.
WARHAWK took that idea :)
just like ND took the Among Thieves subtitle from Sly Cooper's games
bassmonkeee 12-01-08, 07:45 PM WARHAWK took that idea :)

Please add me to your ignore list.
nah I don't use that weak stuff in forums online
IMO who ever does is clearly some soft person with sensitive feelings, who the hell would be bothered by strangers opinions or ways lol?.
just like ND took the Among Thieves subtitle from Sly Cooper's games
Are you serious?
There is honor among thieves
Is a proverb that is hundreds of years old.
PvtChurch 12-01-08, 08:17 PM Two words: Jet pack.
Huh?
just like ND took the Among Thieves subtitle from Sly Cooper's games
No... no... just no. This could not be more wrong.
Anyway, Drake's Fortune was incredible. Cannot wait.
mbgonzomd 12-01-08, 08:22 PM Huh?
Just pretend you never read it. Trust me on this one.
Slacker George 12-01-08, 08:23 PM Oh yeah! This just made my day.

so's your face 12-01-08, 08:44 PM Two words: Jet pack.
just as long as the jetpax aren't $8... i mean, c'mon, is this even a debate anymore?
and also, incognito stole the word fortune as in drake's fortune, from mercinaries 2: soldiers of fortune... how about an original thought, incognito, is that too much to ask?
Notsobright 12-01-08, 08:45 PM keep the same cast, but add more villains and make the game longer. it will kick @$$. maybe add online play too :)
Chairman7w 12-01-08, 10:17 PM I hope they show Elena naked!

i greatly look forward to this game as well as Gran Turismo 5 in 2009.

Well if you want more Elena, watch ER as the actress who plays her is now on the show as an intern (fully clothed you perve)
UNCHARTED 2 = CAN'T WAIT!
JD
Vizion47 12-02-08, 12:28 AM So, you don't suppose he's going to be related to Marco Polo, too, do ya?
No I meant treasures relating to Marco Polo, not Drake himself.
Oh yeah! This just made my day.
You'd think he'd find something a little warmer to wear.
Well seeing how he's holding on to a wrecking train, and then bleeding. I don't think he's out there exactly by choice.
i greatly look forward to this game as well as Gran Turismo 5 in 2009.
Same here, but I'm also adding Killzone 2 to that list.
i greatly look forward to this game as well as Gran Turismo 5 in 2009.
lol, good one!
SKACMAN 12-02-08, 03:56 AM I can't wait to play Uncharted 2, Uncharted is one of my favorite games. I hope they don't stray too much from the style/gameplay of the first one.
confidenceman 12-02-08, 04:23 AM just like ND took the Among Thieves subtitle from Sly Cooper's gamesWow. I think you're actually serious.
I hope they show Elena naked! And without highlights.
Anywhere.
Now that's what I call au naturale.
I'm a huge fan of Uncharted. It's one of my favorite console games ever. The gameplay and cover system are flawless. Granted it took the cover system idea from Gears of War, it approved upon it greatly. Even the main Gears of War creator disgruntingly agreed Uncharted had a much improved cover system than Gears.
As much as I love Uncharted, I feel they missed a golden opportunity to add multiplayer. The gameplay is too much fun to be wasted on AI. I want to play against other humans!
I will buy Uncharted 2 regardless, but I will be HIGHLY disappointed if they don't have any kind of online multiplayer options included.
dragonyeuw 12-02-08, 07:30 AM Not a surprising announcement, but still a game to look forward to in '09.No brainer purchase...

Gears of War took the concept of shooting aliens with guns from Buck Rogers. So, it all balances out in the end.
And, I couldn't care less if there wasn't a multiplayer component. I just want another rip roaring single player tale with Drake, Elana and Skully.

I've seen others say this as well. I just can't comprehend the lack of interest in having multiplayer. It adds so much value to a game.
Smurf Byte 12-02-08, 08:21 AM All that fame from the last game and Drake is still wearing the same clothes.
WilliamR 12-02-08, 08:28 AM Was the first one pretty good or something?
Probably the best video game I have played on a console in years. And hands down the single best video game on a console I have ever seen.

To some Multi player is a must have. Too me Multi player tends to bring out the worse in a game with griefers, cheaters, hackers, not too mention online connection, server problems..etc. For ND to add multi player they will just be opening themselves up for a mountain of complaints and bitching and moaning. Stick to the SP and make it epic (not that Uncharted wasnt epic) There are other Multi player games out there. IMHO
Mikazaru 12-02-08, 08:52 AM Gears of War took the concept of shooting aliens with guns from Buck Rogers. So, it all balances out in the end.
Not only that, but the cover system was taken from a game called Kill.switch.

let me just paint you a picture for a second:
*your screen goes completely blank*
*you hear over your headset random giggles(likely kingshorty)*
then, when you're promted that the game is ready, you yell into your mic, "MARCO!!" and out of your left rear speaker you hear, "POLO!!" :D
and you follow the sound until you catch someone! how awesome would that be? you know... because the game is gonna be about marco polo... and if there's a multiplayer, um, they could have... you know... marco polo... :o:o
ok so it's stupid, but maybe you elect to be elena in a bikini and stare at the character select screen rotating the character until you're ready you pervs! :p:p:p

I’d say go for MP, but go for something different.
Forget true MP DM, CTF, ect, and go for some kind of 4-6 player MP Coop.
One player can be Drake in going through the story mode, while the AI enemies can be taken over by other’s online and work along side AI enemies, sorta like L4D. At other times, when the story calls for it, there could be a computer controlled sidekick, that could also be MP controlled.
It could work, but it would have to be done right.

I agree 100%!!! Uncharted should remain a single player experience.
I personally have grown tired of competitive multiplayer. I actually like it when a game has a great online Co-op mode (SR2 has a great co-op mode and I prefer the COD:WAW co-op over the competitive mutli-player mode)

i thought it was derived from winback? not that it matters... ;)
Hells yeah. That's all I'm sayin.
Mikazaru 12-02-08, 09:24 AM i thought it was derived from winback? not that it matters... ;)
Yeah, you're right... Winback was probably the original "stop'n pop" shooter. I had read somewhere that Gears was "inspired" by Kill.switch though.

I certainly hope they keep the same team for the sequel. You switch up the writers and you could have something as bad as... well... let's see. What sequel that is out there could I possibly use as an example of how much better the original was... hmm......

The official trailer will be shown during Spike TV's Video Game Awards Show on December 14, 2008, 9:00pm.
Just a couple notes.
I believe fortune was from wheel of fortune originally released for Nintendo.:)
Second whoa whoa whoa on the remain single player, they need to add co-op badly, passing the controller back and forth is lame if you want to enjoy this game with a buddy, its so ps1ish.
Every game has single player and you can choose to play by yourself(with yourself?), but that doesnt mean others wouldnt enjoy co-op if drake has a side kick. Its the logical next step.

but as long as there's an online mode for "marco polo" i'll be happy!! :D:D:D

There is a huge difference between Multi player (which is the direction some people want the game to go) and Co-op. I could see 2 player Co-op offline like Resistance Fall of Man. But Multi player online..I'll pass.

Typo then. They cant really hold an awards show for games potentially two years old.

So CGI, or not CGI? This teaser looked like a possible combination of both.
Drake looked pretty much as he did in Uncharted's cutscenes....
If they can get snow to look that good.... wow.
If I remember correctly Uncharted was first shown as a target render, yet the game looked much better with a gritty art style in the end. Let's hope for a repeat!
Uh oh. Voice change on the character?
Uh oh. Voice change on the character?
No.

Yeah, I wasn't sure when I watched it last night. He does kind of sound different.
Uh oh. Voice change on the character?
No.
Have to agree with tgable. Sounded to me like the original guy who did Nathan, Nolan North. I will watch it again at home later and listen to him again more carefully (was too busy looking at the snow and details on his clothes).

I agree with you. But I would rather see some kind of co-op. Very unlikely though since it is heavily story driven, and Drake is alone most of the time.
confidenceman 12-02-08, 12:55 PM I'm definitely not into the idea of adding multiplayer. That's what games like Resistance and Halo and CoD are for. Not every game needs multiplayer. It's getting silly now with gamers and reviewers expecting every single game to have multiplayer.
I think co-op would be a good compromise. Something along the lines of what RE5 is doing. But really, it's not necessary. Uncharted was an exceptional single-player experience and didn't need anything added to it to make it more "valuable."
I had read somewhere that Gears was "inspired" by Kill.switch though.Cover system was inspired by kill.Switch and the general shooting mechanics were inspired by RE4. Everything else was inspired by homosocial pre-adolescent action films.

Asking for online multiplayer in a game like Uncharted is like asking for online MP in GOW 3.
Leave it out

Like I said.
One person plays drake through the story. The others can take over AI enemies.
You'd have to nuke the enemies combat ability somewhat, but going up against real people with real tactics would make it even for both sides.
You could even make a background story for the enemy side while Drakes story plays.
Would love to see more unique MP gameplay styles like this then the old and tired, "most kills" crap.
Bazylik 12-02-08, 03:15 PM MP in a game like uncharted is stupid.
MaxDam77 12-02-08, 03:19 PM Great News, made me want to go back and Play Uncharted: DF again.
MP in a game like Uncharted? Don't know some games are made to be SP and others MP.
I take MGS4 for example, Imo it wasn't meant to be MP. It was quite good but far from greatness.

LOL, but he is getting bigger in every movie (must be tapping in to Stalone's stash of HGH).
I don't know if I'd want Nathan doing barrel rolls in jetskis to knock off bombs, dropping from 20 story buildings and living, etc.

Megalith 12-02-08, 06:49 PM MP people need to go away. The reason why SP games like Uncharted are good is because 70% of the team isn't allocated to doing crap like optimizing netcode and toying around with creative lobbying.
Nathan Fillion should be Drake in the movie.

What is this game about? Does it have an M4 custom or an assault rifle?

If it doesn't play like COD4, I'm not interested.
bplewis24 12-02-08, 08:34 PM I can't wait to play Uncharted 2, Uncharted is one of my favorite games. I hope they don't stray too much from the style/gameplay of the first one.
If I had to nitpick, I would request a longer campaign, slightly more platforming and less shooting, a more varied pacing in the action and diversity in enemies (including enemy A.I.).
If they could add those into the original without detracting from what made the first so good, it would be a perfect game, IMO.
And please, for the love of cartman, do not let the gameplay suffer while trying to cater to an online multiplayer mode. If anything this game could do well with a co-op mode (how would platforming work, though?), but any MP mode should be nothing more than an added bonus.
I havn't seen anyone mention the writing yet. The gameplay was fun, cover system was good, sometimes frustrating camera angles... but the writing/dialogue was top notch. There were several times that I actually laughed out loud, and overall the characters were very well done and significantly added to the quality of gameplay.
No doubt about it. The production values for this game were excellent. The writing, dialogue, story and even musical score were top notch and if not perfect at least you could tell great care went into every aspect of them. On top of this the game was technically seamless and a bit underappreciated at that time (before every game had a 5GB install).
Brandon
Protopet 12-02-08, 08:48 PM Yeah it should only be SP.
I don't want MP to be thrown in there like so many games now. MP in shooting games is getting stale, IMO. COD4, CS:S, R2 coop, and a few others are distinct and fun, but it is getting annoying to just kill x amount of times.
Also, everyone is adding the MMO stuff. I think COD4 did it great besides a few perks. While perks are fun, if not done properly perks and classes(TF2) are annoying as hell(it's plaguing R2 and hopefully not K2). What happened to just killing people, with guns being the variables? Developers should be trying to make their online games stand out and be memorable.
Uncharted was awesome and all I could ask for is a longer game(even though I have not disliked replaying the game 3 or 4 times). The game was refreshing from the FPS genre and very captivating. The gameplay, story, characters, and graphics were all excellent.

I don't think you are really nitpicking, I believe most of those suggestions are something we all would like to see. Diversity in enemies, their appearance and AI would be at the top of my list.

Speaking with Gamezine.co.uk, Naughty Dog's Lead Character Artist Richard Diamant confirmed that the Uncharted 2: Among Thieves debut trailer was rendered in real-time.
"Yes, the trailer was all rendered real-time in our engine" said Diamant.
Outside of the meticulous texture work and animation, we now know that Naughty Dog has added snow simulation to their Uncharted engine. According to early reports, the game’s story will revolve around 13th century explorer Marco Polo and includes all-new gameplay mechanics, such as free climbing and stealth sequences.

Oh wow... you missed the boat on that one. When they released the trophy patch, it was automatically updated with more content so that people could go back and enjoy a somewhat new experience.
Once you collect 3/4's of your treasures and are given the trophy for that, you'll get another prompt where to find the jet pack in the game. It's easy to find. I don't want to ruin the experience and fun if you decided to play through it again.

I believe to unlock the expansion offer you have to collect 100% (61/61) of treasures on "Crushing" difficulty. I could be wrong though but I made sure I had 100% before I finished the game.

i thought the DLC was lacking. once you explored the pinta and the sant maria, the nina had absolutely nothing to do with anything and the chest in the captain's quarters was empty! oh well. still interesting, though, but not worth $8. and the jetpack was sooo stupid... he didn't miss anything.
BTW, here's a link to some screens of the DLC.

joeblow 12-10-08, 07:22 PM Various 'net reports are summing up the newest issue of Game Informer where the game is the cover story. Here is one summary (http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=343928&page=21) from NeoGAF:
- The biggest thing in the article IMO is that there's a new girl named Chloe Frazer. GI asked about Elena and Sully's return but they had no comment.
- The story is about looking for the ships that Marco Polo "lost" while returning home to Italy.
- Melee combat is more dynamic now.
- They mentioned they were using only 30% of the PS3's power with Drake's Fortune and are planning to use nearly 100% with Among Thieves.
- A demo was shown to GI with Drake going through a city (I believe in Nepal), and he's stealthily taking out guards and escaping the city.
- Nolan North returns to be Drake and Chloe Frazer is played by Claudia Black (Stargate SG-1, Fargate).
- The Sixaxis mechanics were ditched for such things as throwing grenades.
- One of the weapons revealed is a rocket launcher that Chloe uses (might only be for the cinematic).
- There are no load screens.
- The score is being composed by Greg Edmonson (same guy from the first one).
- Weapons can be used in any stance (running, behind cover, hanging, climbing a wall, etc.).
- You can now move while aiming behind cover.
- I'm not sure how to explain this one so this is what it says:
"In Uncharted 2, every character fully interacts with the dynamic geometry moving around them, and environments in the background are real parts of the game world"
"If Drake's on top of a train, he's going to be shaking with the train as it moves around"
"As he gets inside, his moveset is going to change, and he's going to be a lot more secure because the wind's not blowing."
- The graphics look better than Uncharted 1.
- Button sequence cinematics such as the final boss have changed so now Drake is now fully controllable in these parts...I think (This one's also hard to describe).
- Climbing seems improved upon. You can climb lamp posts now among other new things.
- If there is an enemy patrolling a rooftop you're climbing a wall to, you can pull him off the roof while hanging on the wall.
Megalith 12-10-08, 07:25 PM They mentioned they were using only 30% of the PS3's power with Drake's Fortune and are planning to use nearly 100% with Among Thieves.
This has to be BS, right...

It's a short game and you can plow through it in a day or two. If you're big on the silly trophies or unlocking mostly bland "making of" videos and such then there may be a little more value but I'd say rent it first and if you still want to play it more then ebay it for $25-$35. It's likely going to be cheaper now that the bundle will help in flooding the market with an older game.

Maybe they're going the James Bond/Indiana Jones route, a new girl in every adventure. I'd miss Elena but that would be cool too.

bdwright77 12-11-08, 03:24 PM I do hope Skully returns. The dialogue was very good. I do have to admit though, I'm pretty much sold on the game having brought back the composer from the first. That soundtrack was just awesome.

Slacker George 12-12-08, 04:48 AM From Playstation.com: (http://www.us.playstation.com/PS3/Games/UNCHARTED_2_Among_Thieves/Description)
Fortune hunter Nathan Drake returns in UNCHARTED 2: Among Thieves™, a pulse-pounding third-person action-adventure/shooter created by award-winning developer Naughty Dog. Down on his luck, Drake is lured back into the treacherous world of thieves and mercenary treasure-seekers he had sought to leave behind. When a mysterious artifact propels Drake on an expedition to find the legendary Himalayan valley of Shambhala, he finds himself embroiled in a dangerous game of cat-and-mouse against a fugitive war criminal who’s after more than just the fabled riches of the lost city. Caught in a web of deception and plunged into an increasingly deadly pursuit that tests the limits of his endurance, Drake will be forced to risk everything – but has his luck finally run out?
KingShorty 12-12-08, 06:12 AM The plot sounds a lot like National Treasure.
PS
Assassin's Creed is still a great game in my book!
I agree that the game was pretty good, the visuals were awesome, and the way the story was told IMO was top notch....however those claiming that the gameplay was "Flawless" really need slapped. The gameplay was clunky at best. Some parts required tightroping boards and making tough jumps that I remember having to repeat 20 times just because the controls sucked so bad. An accidental nudge and you go flying back to the ground. The cover system was ok. I find Gears system more fluid (other than the getting stuck to walls aspect). Aiming felt clunky and heavy also, and it was just an exercise in repeatedly headshot-ing a human enemy 10 times before he went down. The thought of playing this game in Multi-player is laughable. I hope the gameplay is smoothed out quite a bit otherwise its rental for me.

Anyone who says someone calling it "flawless" needs to get slapped and simultaneously calls it "clunky at best" needs crotch punch for being a hyperbole usin' hypocrite.
Logic dictates that a game considered by a large faction to be a watershed moment in gaming can't possibly be "clunky at best."
And, if anyone says it was only popular because there were no games for the PS3, I will set you on fire. I am not kidding.
Slacker George 12-12-08, 08:35 AM I haven't read the GI article so I don't know if this has already been addressed, but is it possible this could take place before the events in Uncharted?

Maybe you just weren't very good at the game. I beat the game on Crushing difficulty and never experienced the clunkiness in the controls or had to repeat sections 20 times. Either that, or you are heavily exaggerating.

Slacker George 12-12-08, 09:59 AM why, would it need to be?
I'm fine with Drake being a combination of Indy and Bond :)Not that it would need to be, but the description says Drake's down on his luck. That means things would have to have gone pretty bad for him after the ending of Uncharted. Which is certainly possible in his line of work.
And if you remember, that's exactly what the Indy movies did with Temple of Doom. :D
Edit
And it could also be telling that they aren't calling this Uncharted 2. I'm calling prequel right here and now!
Someone go find some more screen shots of this game. I need to see more!!
Also, someone posted above about the controls being clunky?! I thought they were good. I had no problem in platforming areas. It is no where near the frustration as the first couple Tomb Raider games.
Now they were some clunky controls. I remember walking to edge. Lining up jump and taking one full hop back for small jump and two full jumps back for long running jump. Also, after you jumped back camera would normally move on you so you had to know how many steps two full jumps back from the edge gave you so that you could time the jump with your final step planting on the edge. LOL....they sucked but I loved those games.

Seriously? I think the Gears cover system blows. IMO. Uncharted was fluid, simple, linear, and just plain fun. Maybe you were playing a different game?
However, I understand it might not have been a game you liked. But your opinion doesn't dictate fact. If you didn't like that means only one thing. That you are in the minority with your opinion.

LOL....they sucked but I loved those games.
Well not exactly screen shots, but here you go.

bplewis24 12-12-08, 10:47 AM At the time I was heavy into COD4 and GT5P, GOW2, Okami, Rogue Galaxy, PJ Monsters and then MGS4 came out and then Madden 09 and then R2. Between 10 hr shifts 6 days a week, a 45 minute commute, managing a small business in this turd of an economy and a wife... it's just hard man, so hard. I.. I didn't even play LBP yet. *breaks down in tears*
Wow, that felt good. Thanks for the session confidenceman, same time next week? Oh, and I almost forgot to mention all that time wasted on Assassin's Creed. ;)
PJ Monsters is awesomeness. I still haven't tried out the expansion pack that I bought for it
Brandon
bplewis24 12-12-08, 10:57 AM ....however those claiming that the gameplay was "Flawless" really need slapped. The gameplay was clunky at best.
I don't recall anybody calling the gameplay "flawless," so if they did you might as well direct your post at them. However to say the gameplay was clunky at best is comical. It was very good.
Some parts required tightroping boards and making tough jumps that I remember having to repeat 20 times just because the controls sucked so bad.
Then you're just not very good at this game. That was definitely not the case for me.
Credibility=shot. Why would you rent a game that is a sequel to one that was horrible?
I see what you're doing there ;)

Read my whole post. The game was fun, it was beautiful looking and I loved the way the story was told, so of course I will at least rent the sequel....
Is it not possible to like a game but have criticisms about it as well? The controls were clunky to me. Did it take away from the game? Not really...but it wasnt flawless by any stretch of the imagination. Thats my opinion...I'm not trying to push it as fact to anyone, I'm entitled to it just as everyone else is entitled to theirs so don't get your Uncharted panties in a bunch.

Hi. It must have had something to do with the following extract in particular. Criticism is ok, there's just a better way to present it.
"those claiming that the gameplay was "Flawless" really need slapped. The gameplay was clunky at best."

My panties are as comfortable as can be, thank you. Your unreasonable criticisms don't have a bearing on that. Keep in mind that ratings for gameplay were very high for this game, and in particular one of the weaknesses Gamespot listed for this game was "platforming can be too forgiving at times." You claim the exact opposite. You're either not very good at the game or grossly exaggerating (such as 10 headshots to take a guy down).
I have to ask you though, how can gameplay not take away from a game? If I enjoyed the story and graphics of a game but didn't like the gameplay, there's no way I could force myself to play through it. Gameplay is the single most important factor for me.
Brandon

Pardon my over the top point making.... your point is taken. It would just be nice to see some folks make honest criticisms of even the good games, because they all have their faults. One of my big pet peeves with games is how smooth I feel they move. I'll use COD4 versus Perfect Dark Zero as an extreme comparison. I thought the content of PDZ was amazing, but its movements were absolutely not smooth and aiming felt like a real chore and it really brought the game down IMO....on the flip side games like COD4 are so buttery smooth it feels natural every time you pickup the controller and aim. Uncharted was not in that category to me, and if part 2engine/gameplay were to be polished a bit more I think it could be.

There were a few moments when I did consider stopping, but the graphics and story kept me pushing through. The "movie" feel to it was great.
I agree though with gameplay being the single most important factor. Heck even with Gears of War 2 I think there is a night and day difference between the way it plays online vs. campaign. Campaign was amazing, but up close combat online is, dare I say, clunky.
You arent getting anywhere by criticizing my skills at the game, I was plenty good at it. I made it through the whole thing on hard first time through which wasnt easy in spots. I don't think I am exaggerating much(maybe not 10 headshots, but you have to admit when playing on hard the enemies take an extreme amount of bullets for being regular human beings).
Abaddon 12-12-08, 12:46 PM You're either not very good at the game or grossly exaggerating (such as 10 headshots to take a guy down). To be fair, he never claimed those headshots were hitting, so this could also be filed away in the "not very good at the game" bin ;).

I'm not criticizing your skills at the game just to be a jerk or inflammatory (however I am a pretty big douchebag in general). But I think the platforming aspects were typically rather easy, which is one of my gripes with the game. I would prefer harder (and more) platforming and less shooting. And I didn't feel the controls hindered the platforming aspect.

Then you should play Prince of Persia, douchebag!
There's tonnes of platforming and absolutely no guns! :D
He said he wanted harder platforming, though; isn't it impossible to die in PoP?
KingShorty 12-12-08, 02:41 PM He said he wanted harder platforming, though; isn't it impossible to die in PoP?
you can't die. But if you challenge yourself it can get hard.
For me, I want to finish the game without having Elika save me more than 100 times (for the trophy). Because of the way the platforming is set up, it's a lot of platforming after platforming and if you fall, you get placed back on the last spot where you had your two feet on the ground. So you could have made it through 3/4 of a platforming sequence, screw up and have to start it over again.
Yes, I'm a trophy whore!
Does it keep track of how many times you've 'died?' Like in the pause menu or something?
pdiss88 12-12-08, 03:13 PM Does it keep track of how many times you've 'died?' Like in the pause menu or something?
Hopefully not, it may drive some people to the brink of suicide to see statistics such as those.
Maybe you just weren't very good at the game. I beat the game on Crushing difficulty and never experienced the clunkiness in the controls or had to repeat sections 20 times. Either that, or you are heavily exaggerating.
Me too. I found the controls and the platforming elements a ton of fun and appropriately challenging. I never had issue with missing jumps :) sometims figuring out the correct jump, but not missing them.
bdwright77 12-12-08, 03:38 PM Combat on crushing is insane though. I die pretty effing quick.
joeblow 12-12-08, 04:34 PM The main and only complaint I had with the controls was that they combined dodging with cover. Sometimes I wanted to do one but the other action had priority depending on where I was on the map. I hear that has been resolved in the sequel.
However by the time I beat Crushing, I was so in tune with the controls that I actually wished there was another difficulty called 'Extremely Crushing'.

Word is that there is already a playable demo/beta that some people have played.
KingShorty 12-13-08, 01:36 PM I don't think it's a beta and much less a demo.
I think what people are playing are Alpha versions of the game.
Beta versions should drop some time in March for the big GDC and CES shows with an 80% ready version ready in June for E3.
That's just my timeline. I'm expecting an Oct/Nov release.

It's my fault for not being clear. I didn't mean a demo like the ones you download. I meant like a demonstration, that shows a small glimpse of the game.
I actually expect this game to launch before autumn '09. Seeing as they already have their engine built and seem to be progressing fairly well. Although I'm probably wrong, but I sure hope not.
Man, I wish I hadn't heard of this game until it's one month from release.

I can't even find it on iTunes. I'm waiting for another deal to show up to buy the game, but the El Dorado Megamix that plays in Home has me sold on the music. That track is sweet.

I really love Joystiq sometimes:
We here at Joystiq typically try our best to make you, our dear readers, feel as appreciated as humanly possible, so forgive us for breaking form as we reveal to you that we hate your stupid guts sometimes. Our disdain stems from admittedly flawed logic -- if it weren't for you, we'd have no audience, and the brothers McElroy would have no reason to watch and liveblog the 2008 Spike Video Game Awards show tonight. Instead, we'd be out performing activities preferable to watching the VGAs -- activities like eating light bulbs, throwing ourselves in front of trains and ritual self-immolation.

True, but one thing that's new was the uber long draw distance and open field of view.
Some parts of uncharted were similar, but not much was going on in the backgrounds.
Then again, this wasn't gameplay.
Looking forward to duking it out in a train and causing that crash!

Why? What you expect? game's not out for a very long time....
If you're buy into hype, then you deserve to be disappointed, since you've already made an opinion on what it should be without any knowledge of what it is.
I saw a pretty good in-game scene, better graphics, a more epic location and situation, and much better use of the tech (and did you see those flames?).
This one's going to be good.
bdwright77 12-15-08, 10:36 AM I dont think its buying into the hype to get excited over seeing the first few images of a game that you (reasonably) expect to be good. It's just disappointing when we get lured in to watching a highly anticipated trailer that ends up being, well, not very much of anything.

then don't get lured in by the marketing wharrgarbl.
When I hear this stuff I pretty much hear "new trailer", think to myself cool, and don't bother with the rest of the ENDLESS commentary and conjecture from gamer pundits, and the pushing from the TV shows.
Like I said, The trailer was probably the best we got from the VGA's if you think about it. It looked the best, it was actual gameplay/realtime, got me interested in the story and art direction, and it showed not much has changes from uncharted, a game we loved.
To me, that's a great first teaser trailer. (well, 2nd teaser)
The full trailers will come once we get closer to the final product.

I didn't buy into the hype, I'm commenting on what it is versus what they made people expect. I just wasn't expecting it to A) be so short and B) be a scene we've already seen stuff for. You basically got a real-time shot of the GameInformer cover.
