View Full Version : Family room/tv room project (is it even worth while?)

We are looking to convert our family room into a "mini-theater"--still keep it a family room, but add surround sound, big tv, etc.

The main hurdles I see are:

1. Large opening in the back of the room (a lot of flanking, I'm guessing)
2. It's under the kids bedroom (so we want to sound proof as much as possible)
3. We're looking to add can lights in the ceiling and wall speakers in the walls

Because of these 3 things--I'm wondering if the project is even feasible. Or will there be too much sound leaking (from the wall speakers, ceiling lights, opening to the hall) regardless of how much we use DD/GG? (Would boxing the speakers and cans be "good enough"?)

Thanks for the feed back.

It would probably be easier to just sound proof the kids bedroom.

There have been several documented theaters here in open family rooms that achieve at least 80% of the image and sound quality of the best dedicated rooms so it can be done.

Gotta say I'm with Big here it is probably easier (and cheaper) to sound proof the kids room than do DD/GG in the family room RobZ has a great living/family room example of what can be done besides a dedicated room.

I would also shy away from inwall speakers I think this would increase your sound issues rather than help them same or worse for the can lights.

You can still come up with a great living room theater with some careful planning.
