no BC= no buy? is all I heard from people

I never saw it but isn't this version just an 40 gig PS3 with 160 gig HDD, or is it the 80 gigs version? with 160 gig hd

no BC= no buy

heard people didn't even get it in stores, they rather go with 40 gig.

So I guess if you are ever in the market to buy a PS3 you'll be stuck with used ones since no new ones have BC.

Both the 80GB and the 160GB are the old 40GB with different hard drives and dual shock controllers. The 80GB with BC is discontinued.

The 160GB is just the same thing as the 80GB with a bigger drive, and more expensive. Probably better off getting the cheaper 80GB and with the extra money buy a 320GB or 500GB 2.5 laptop drive and drop that in.

I would assume that at some point down the road that PS3 will be BC again. Once they find that sales of PS2 is down significantly they will discontinue that and have it BC on the PS3. It will be cheaper to have it BC anyway in the future.

Why? Before the PS2 there was no such thing as BC in consoles. I don't see it ever coming back especially since they need a price cut right now.

You could even ebay the older hard drive for additional savings. As I see it, there is no need to buy the 160GB PS3.

You just gave me an idea. I currently have a laptop with a 40 gig drive that is getting kind of tight on space. I could buy a new 320 or 500 gig drive for the PS3, then reformat the 80 gig drive from the PS3 and drop it in my laptop.

And if you bought a HDD enclosure you could put the 40GB in it, install the 80GB in your laptop, and use some clone software to get the laptop the way you left it.

I went a similar route with my laptop and PS3. Bought a 320GB HDD and 2.5" USB drive enclosure. Put the 320GB in my laptop removing the old 120GB HDD. Put the 120GB HDD with all the data into the enclosure. Connected the enclosure to the laptop and used a disc clone utility.

Then took out the 40GB drive from my PS3 and replaced it with the 120GB drive. Now I have a 40GB HDD in that enclosure for whenever I need to move files around and also have upgraded storage in two devices.

They won't be losing my 320 that's in there now. And if you need to stick the HDD back in - there goes the back ups. I now have a 160 to back up my 320 and the original 60 just sits antistatic bag in the PS3 box in case of emergency.

I put my 60gb in my wife's 40gb. So I have a 320gb, the wife has my old stock 60gb and I have her stock 40gb in the anti-static bag in a drawer.

I think that I would remember to transfer my files prior to putting the HDD back into my broken PS3. And losing a backup shouldn't matter since by definition you still have the original. Anyway, I only use it for file transfers and have only done that a couple times. I have 1.5TB of NAS for backups.

The real problem comes into play when losing backups is that the original HDD might be many months old data, minus new programs and game save. Pretty time consuming loss if one were to lose it if you ask me. And to boot some information in the Backups will not transfer well to a new PS3 (ie not the same machine). The same would go for moving the HDD - a full reformat will occur if taking it to another PS3. All I was saying is to be cautious of where people store backups and files as you never know when the HDDs will need to be swapped or shifted or reformated.

if your laptop is only 40GB, I'd bet it isn't SATA but likely IDE.

agreed. likely IDE.

when i swapped launch 60gig with a 320gig seagate i bought a cheap enclosure and now use the 60gig as external storage.

As I stated before, it will come back when they discontinue the PS2. At that point, the added cost will be minimal and they will want to attract the PS2 users to switch to the new platform. Right now, they don't want to do it because the PS2 is such a cash cow for them. Very high margin business. Why kill the goose that lays the golden eggs?

This. It gives them time to work on the kinks in the software emulation, too.

amazon also has the silver MGS4 PS3. That's the first one I'd buy.

completed ebay auctions go for about $60 for the bundled game and go for $100 and over for the silver controller.

The PS3 is $399. Sell the game and controller and buy a DS3 and the net is $299.
