Usually the term "combo" would apply to DVDR/VHS combos, but if you don't care about the VHS part then by all means the 2 Wajo mentioned should be quite good.

So are there any with a tuner that doesn't have to scan every time you change stations ?

If you are using the QAM tuner, which will receive the non-scrambled cable channels, you will have to rescan regularly, because the cable co.s remap the channels regularly. If you are using the ATSC over the air tuner, you should only need to rescan once in a while, to pick up anything new.

My Magnavox 2080 has in a grey rectangle the text "now scanning" when I change channels using the ATSC tuner. Is it just mine that does this or maybe because I'm a long way from stations ? Takes it from 3 to 10 seconds to put any station on screen.

3-5 seconds seems too long. Many DVDRs do take a second or two to lock onto digital channels and when surfing 1-2 seconds seems like an eternity. For whatever reason TVs and CECB seem to lock onto the digital channels much faster than DVDRs. It's one reason I really never watch live TV using a DVDRs built in digital tuner. When it says "scanning" I don't think it's really scanning but rather trying to lock onto the station. As mentioned a channel scan usually only needs to be done once when you first setup the DVDR.

Hum, just what I figured, trying to lock the station. Neighbor with 50 ft. tower and
new antenna system has same problem, also only gets one english station. I suppose
when the switch comes we'll get more stations, either that or I'll quit watching TV.

Unfortunately many people in the "fringe" area for analog TV may find that with digital they'll get nothing:(
Digital is great if you can get over the minimum threshold, but if you can't, nothing.
I think satellite companies may see a decline from people who find out they can get excellent picture with OTA digital, but they'll see a increase from people in outlying areas who can't get anything.

We get 3 analog stations now, neigbors 50 ft. tower system get's 7, and we all get
one DTV english station. No one around here that has not already gone satellite
plans on going satellite, TV is not a must have for a lot of people.

Best bet for DVD players with built in atsc tuner are from Amazon if you need one pretty quickly and less than $300

Otherwise, I think you should look at price comparison sites such as

1. MoneySupermarket
2. NextTag

Another place to go is Ebay. This is where there are deals on everyday. Just keep looking :)
