I recently purchased a Toshiba 30HF66 CRT HDTV. The convergence is quite a bit off on both sides of the tube. I know there will be a slight amount of misconvergence on the sides of the tube due to the tube being so wide, but on my set it's off to the point of being quite distracting. I live in Homeland, California which is between Perris and Hemet. Can any TV service person in that area come to my home and converge my unit. If so, how much will it cost?

By any chance, is the misconvergence that you mention just the television's stretch mode?
i.e. a 4:3 broadcast stretched to a 16:9 aspect ratio

No, this problem is beam convergence. I used to be able to converge some of the first color sets back in the sixties, but I imagine it's done quite differently these days. How does one approach this problem?

Most large crts are converged using a dynamic (electronic) convergence. Generally a service mode is used for this purpose. I don't have any experience with Toshiba sets. You may find threads on Toshiba crts in this forum. Try the search function.

My Sony set has very sophisticated convergence, but I don't know Toshibas. You can get a Service Manual: Google "toshiba 30hf66 service manual" , manualsparadise.com has it, about $20.

Most large crts are converged using a dynamic (electronic) convergence. Generally a service mode is used for this purpose.

All CRTs are converged fully dynamically, except Trinitrons which are partly static (using permanent magnets along with a simpler dynamic convergence system).

If the service menu does not help, take a look inside. You may find the convergence adjustments at the top of the deflection in the form of small pots. I've seen a number of TV sets that do not have those adjustments, but all CRT monitors have them so it's worth a look. I use Nokia Monitor Test to converge my monitors (the purple pattern is the best), you could connect your computer to your TV and use that so there will be no need of a test disc.
