Hi... just joined... :D

I have a couple of very basic questions, hopefully someone can give me the straight answers.

I just bought a new ONKYO TXSR 706B receiver. Actually haven't received it yet... 2 mores days of waiting.

This receiver has 4 HDMI in ports and 1 HDMI out port.

Question #1: I have a box FULL of every kind of cable imaginable as most of you do. I know HDMI is the latest thing and eliminates the tangle behind the components, but are these cables actually superior to Component and Optical cables?

Question #2: Is it really as simple as one HDMI cable from each of the components to the receiver, and then one HDMI out to the TV? Is there any need for any of the other types of cables?

Thanks,
Steve

#1: In theory HDMI is better since it's all digital directly to your TV, but the results can vary from setup to setup. I would recommend going with HDMI but you'd have to compare the two with your system to know for sure.

Optical can not carry the latest lossless audio formats from a Blu-ray player. They are only available through HDMI.

#2: Yes. You only need the HDMI cable, nothing else. It carries both the digital video and digital audio.

P.S. If you go HDMI, don't buy overpriced cables such as from Monster. Forum sponsors such as Monoprice and Blue Jeans Cable sell good performing cables priced at a fraction of the cost of Monster cables.

If your receiver will do all the audio, can you connect component from your receiver and run to your TV and get 1080P there? I didn't know if HDMI would have to be run to get 1080P on the display.
