Just wondering if I have this correct for using a non HDMI AVR?
What else do I need to do? Especially interested in what wires need to bo from/to the TV as it is wall mounted. I do have a 2" conduit that I can get to but it has a cover plate on the outlet so after the TV is mounted I am not sure how easy it will be to add wires without taking the TV off the wall 112#'s.
see the new drawing for the latest change.
As I now understand it if you run the aud from the Tv to the AVR you only have 2 channel sound??
So I understand I am supposed to go from both the cable box and BD player with aud to the AVR.. My question is using what?? Optic... I thought component was better than optic?? but it says 2 ch by the 2 component connectors of the BD player and it also has all the speaker outs for 7.1 sound but that is 8 RCA jacks??
I could use some help here.
How do I conect the BD player and comcast box to the AVR so I can output 5.1 sound?
It is true that most TVs will only output 2 channel audio. The only exception I can think of are TVs with digital tuners built in allowing for SPDIF output for 5.1 feeds being received over the air.
If you have a cable box that supports surround sound, then I would run either optical or coax digital cable to the AVR from it.
As for the BD Player, if you use an optical or coax digital audio connection then you will only get 5.1 surround sound and you will only get the Dolby Digital and core DTS signals from Blu-Rays. This means you won't be taking advantage of any PCM, Dolby TrueHD, or DTS MA tracks.
What BD Player do you have? If it does indeed have 8 channel analogue out and will decode the above formats, then yes you will need to run 8 RCA cables from the BD Player to the receiver (to take advantage of the HD sound, that is).
Hope this helps.
tv is the pioneer pro151fd... the BD player is the pioneerBDP51fd
my rec is a pioneer VSX2012 7.1 sound 110x7 Watts but no HDMI... I am not a pioneer fanboy just fell into buying this stuff. the AVR does have one multi channel in so with 8 RCA's I could hook up the BD player that way..
IS the quality of hte RCA cord real important here? I would only need 2-3' cords
The comcast HD box only has opitcal HDMI and 3 RCA component audio/video out??
What kind of sound would this yeild? I thought it would still be 5.1 sound but maybe I am wrong?
First the cable box: The three RCA component you see only carries a video signal. It sounds like the only way to get surround sound from it is through the optical and maybe the HDMI. I know my satellite PVR only sends stereo over the HDMI. So your best bet for the cable box is to hook it up to your receiver using optical which will get you Dolby Digital 5.1 from HD broadcasts supporting it.
Now about your BD Player. As we have already concluded, the only way to get full quality HD audio and/or 7.1 is over 8 x RCAs. At 2-3', you don't need ultra high quality RCAs, but don't settle for junk. Make sure they have good connectors, the cables aren't super thin, and that you buy them from a reputable source.
