View Full Version : Shadowbox Depth

So, I'm looking to do a shadowbox and built-in on my screen wall. I plan on borrowing from Tapiozona's design here

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee136/CDLehner/Mr%20Blondes%20HT%20Room/DSC00172-1.jpghttp://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee136/CDLehner/2001732157832544057_rs-1.jpg

I think I kind of answered my own question, which was, to sight, even though the built in will need to be like 18-20" deep, the shadowbox didn't seem like it should be (or that I'd want it that deep)...so the built-in will stick out from the side pillars and I was wondering if that might look unusual, but I see Tap's does exactly that and obviously I like it or I wouldn't be stealing it :D

Any special rules or calculators for shadowbox depth? I like the idea of boxing in the viewing area, but as I said, I don't think too deep is a good idea, and I'd imagine it could interfere with line of sight.

Also, I explained to my drywall/GC guy what I wanted to do, as far as the shadowboxing, and he said "no problem...I'll do it after we finish the rocking". Now I'm no expert, hence the GC in the first place, but I would have thought any framing like that would need to be done before the last of the rock went up; specifically I would think you'd need access to the ceiling joists, to attach the build-out framing to...but when I mentioned it he just said "no, no...I'll just do this to that, and the whatchamacallit too, and it'll be fine; I do it all the time".

Now, it bears repeating, I don't know anything about this stuff, so I'm not trying to be a PITA to my GC...he probably knows best...but I don't want to let him roll over me into a mistake. Any thoughts?

Thanks,
CD

I think the depth is more of personal taste more than anything, but there also may be other reasons why you need a certain depth (like for a center channel or maybe the right and left front speakers reside in the pillars).

As for building everything after the sheetrock is up that is fine and actually preferred. This way you "seal" the room and then build within the room.

Thanks I2P; good to know my guy at least knows something.

Ideally you want your speakers to be flush with the screen wall if not behind the screen. I placed mine flush so I have no shadowbox. Its also a lot less work IMO. The panels are removable. The whole process to me about 3 days. But in the end it has a lot to do with personal preference.

I don't have in-walls for the Fronts, I have floorstanders, but I intend to recess them into the built-out sides...even though they won't be quite flush with the screen.

I would have liked to few your pics killroy, but it doesn't look like they're embedded in your htshack thread, and I guess you need an account there to open them up.

Sign up its free, they don;t allow non register users to view embedded photos. I have not gotten around to putting those pics on my site yet, but I will so you can see them. Here is a link to my site (http://www.itsallbutstraw.com/gallery2/main.php?g2_itemId=8617)that shows the speakers. I have been having issues with my internet connection and DNS so if the link does not work try again later.
