View Full Version : Getting fullscreen on 4:3 Sony with HD-connected DVD player?

Hello all,

I couldn't find anything about this in my search of this site, but I imagine that someone here can help!

I finally connected a HD source to my aging Sony KV36-HS510, a Playstation3 that I bought primarily for its Blu Ray capability. I connected it via an HDMI-to-DVI cable and everything works fine (other than the dreaded right-to-left wave that I hope I can fix in the SM via the old thread here).

However, it didn't take me long to discover that I couldn't watch full-screen DVDs. The DVI input forces the Sony into squeeze mode and disables the option to choose full screen. I've heard there is a service menu fix to re-enable that option.

Help!

I have the same model TV with a 32" tube. The only way you can get full screen video is if the output of your source is 480i/p. If your source is 720p or 1080i, the display will go letterbox. So that I make this post even more confusing, even if the actual video content is a 4:3 image, it will still appear in the squeeze mode with black sides if again the output is 720p or 1080i. There is no way around this behavior, the TV is behaving as designed. The component video inputs behave the same way.

Did Blu-rays play well? I have 32HS510, wonder if there is any HDCP problems using DVI? I used DVI ,with a Sony SAT-HD200 Direct TV box that gets HDTV off the normal over the air broadcasts. I could get full screen from digital 4:3 480p signals, letterbox from HDTV 16:9 signals. Maybe there is a setting in the PS3 so you can get 480p?

Sounds like the difficulty is with the PS3, not the television. It's upscaling the signal regardless of media input, which would be cool if you had a newer widescreen HDTV. You should post in the PS3 forum and see if there is a unique media auto-detect setting that will not upscale fullscreen DVDs (I kind of doubt it). Otherwise you'd have to manually turn off HD ouptuts each time you want to view a fullscreen medium.

Well, the real problem is that Sony hardwired the DVI input to be 16:9 They call it Vertical Compression. It doesn't matter what I set the PS3 to output.

jdre, the BluRays look great! I had the dreaded scrolling white bar problem (see the thread on the first page of this forum topic). I fixed that and all is well, except for the vertical compression.

I'm am sure there must be a service menu item to force the compression to turn off. I just can't seem to find it!

Thanks!

Good to hear they do work! Scrolling white bar on 1080i, what is the fix? Was that also the right to left wave you referred to? No links appeared to topics.

That's been my experience with the DVI input of the TV in question. I have a Samsung box connected to the port. If the slider in the back of the box is set to 480i/p the video is full screen. There's nothing "hardwired" about the DVI port which forces the TV into 16:9 mode.

Well, you guys were right. I turned off the automatic up-conversion on the PS3 and non-anamorphic DVDs are properly formatted. However, the resolution suffers. For some reason the line doublers (or whatever fills in the horizontal lines) are not enabled and the DVD looks worse than it did with my old component connected el-cheapo player!

Of course, that will only be for non-anamorphic disks, since I can leave the upscaling on for the rest.

Again, I would still like the find the service menu switch to turn off automatic v-compression, since the output would still be upscaled to 1080i for the full screen.

Thanks for the suggestions!

donkol,

The switch you're looking for is 2170D-3/JUMP. This turns the vertical compression on HD signals off or on. If you need to tweak the picture further try 2170D-1/ASPT.
