I have samsung's LED DLP, HLS5679w, 23 months old, love it. Unfortunately, it's acting up -- power cycling. Thanks to the HLS5679 thread on this forum I'm confident that I could fix it myself by replacing the capacitors on the power supply. Still, I decided to call Samsung and see what they could do for me even when I was clearly out of warranty. After sweet talking the rep, laying out a long sob-story, gushing about how much I spent and loved the set, she agreed to give me "free parts" for the repair and she scheduled an appointment with the local (DC) service center.

So here is my dilemma: Should I
A) just fix the set myself and go on about my life, or
B) take the chance that the service center may screw up my set, knowing that they will charge me for labor (just to diagnose it's $75)?

The only advantage that I see to option B is that I may get a new set. I've read that at least one other avs member had this issue and samsung replaced his set since this model is out of production and as such the service center couldn't get the parts. Should I take a chance at dealing with the service center headache on the hopes of scoring a new tv just because I've been offered free parts? Advice please!

Are the free parts simply the capacitors or is it the whole power supply? This model has two "power supplies", one is available but the other is on back order-

Did you find out the labor rate to do the repair? Don't be surprised if it's as much as $75 + $200.

Well, assuming that the samsung techs could correctly diagnose the problem (I'm hesitant to help them out in any way), then "free parts" would cover the entire power supply.

By the way, thanks for your reply and for finding those links!
I'm going to call the service center to get a quote on their labor rate. Obviously it factors into the final decision, I dont mind paying them 2 or 3 hundred dollars if it means that I end up with a new tv because of parts unavailability, on the other hand, I dont want to pay that just to end up with the same tv I could have fixed for less than $20.
