I have a question:
I just saw this while reading my manual for my Onkyo dvdp:
"....The DV-CP704 supports High-Definition Multimedia Interface Specification Information Version 1.0 "

does my dvdp being a HDMI 1.0 limit the quality of the pic?, as my Samsung LN40A550 TV supports HDMI 1.3 ??

I know that 1.3 is technically a higher spec, and that 1.0 is now "obsolete:, but how VISIBLE would be the difference if I was using a HDMI 1.3 dvdp?
should I get a newer dvdp that supports HDMI 1.3 ??

I just wanna make sure this is not something like putting watered down 87 octane in a BMW that's only supposed to run on premium gas to show its best performance.

Thanks a lot...

No difference. 1.3 supports some additional features, but picture quality will be the same. A DVD player isn't offering you true HD in the first place. There are certainly DVD players that will offer better PQ on DVD's, but being HDMI 1.3 isn't the reason.

With respect to watching movies, the big difference between HDMI 1.0 and 1.3 concern bit streaming hi-rez audio formats (TruHD and DTS-MA [and DSD but that's for SACDs]). For SD DVDs, 1.0 limits nothing.

Cool. Thanks a lot.
audio aspects don't concern me right now, as i only have a 2.1 system.

so as the HDMI 1.0 doesn't limit anything, I don't need to run and get a newer dvdp, I guess..

I might try to find a used oppo 980 just for its superior PQ though...and it upconverts to 1080 p really well, I've heard....(my onki dvdp only upconverts to 1080i)

The key to good SD DVD playback is deinterlacing, going from the 480i output of the MPEG decoder to 480p for subsequent scaling to whatever resolution you use or what is the native resolution of a digital display. And proper calibration of your display makes a big difference too.
