2003 50" Hitachi 1080i projection hdtv wityh one DVI and one component connection.
SAT. Direct TV to be switched to component (1080i all i can get anyway).

TV DVI to HDMI cable switched:confused: to new Pany 35 or 55k Blue ray dvd?

Optcal audio to receiver? or HDMI to Receiver-HDMI to dvi on TV (maybe?) via new Onkyo 606 receiver (Polk Speakers possible)?

Biggest Question: Will blue ray player upgrade-upscale regular dvd's thru DVI connection?
Understand can't be upgraded thru component connection?

The latter would be the recommended configuration, as then you can get the new advanced audio (either decoded in player and transported as multichannel LPCM or bitstreamed) into your receiver, instead of getting just the DTS core/DD companion streams on titles that have advanced format audio. Just make sure to set the "HDMI Audio Out" option for your receiver to "Off"; otherwise your TV's lack of HDMI will cause the negotiation of audio transport to fail, and may cause you to get no audio at all.

As long as your TV supports DVI with HDCP (many do, but not all), then yes; if not, you won't be able to play anything. And no, no Blu-Ray player upscales via its component outs, only via HDMI. (It's the way the industry wants it.)

Your DVI should work the same as HDMI except that it will not carry sound. You are using optical so no problem.

Blue Ray will only ouput 1080p over DVI/HDMI if the receiving system supports HDCP.
Blue RAy will output 1080i or 1080p over Component if the Image Constraint Token is not set by the studio for a Blu Ray disk master.

Far as I know, there aren't (yet) any discs that have ICT on them, are there? Not that I'd even notice (I use HDMI myself), but I was pretty sure it hadn't been used yet.

Will have to check manual closer to see if TV Hitachi 50V500 has HDCP ...If not probably have to get new TV $ouch! I have 5 disc SonyDVD player AV system DAV-FC7 component only system. Could I use those speakers with new 606 receiver?
