Ok just got my Pioneer 6020fd and love it. I have a question though. On my directv box there is a button for 480, 720p and 1080i. Nothing for 1080p.
Do I need to call Directv and get a new hd box to get 1080p? Is there something I need to do with the settings on my tv? Thanks in advance.

Satellite signals are not broadcasted in 1080p except some pay services on Dish Network. Blue Ray is your only 1080p source

You will need another box. I have an HR22 which is also a DVR and 1080p is selectable.
However, as of today, the only 1080P offering from DirecTV is 'The Incredible Hulk" trailer.

Not true. While there is no light for 1080p on the HR21, and using the "format" button to cycle will do nothing, with a recent update 1080p is selectable as a resolution option in the setup menu. Go to the setup menu, down to "HDTV", and at the top there should be a "resolution" tab. When you open it, 1080p is now an option but by default it's not checked, so you need to select it.
But it's true that the only current offering is that trailer.

I just read the op question again, and I don't see him mentioning an HR21 nor any model (which he should have) for that matter.
Since he didn't mention the model number, I assumed since he does not have the option to select 1080P, he probably doesn't have a dvr.
If he has a dvr, than what you said is true as DirecTV's offering of 1080P is only watchable as VOD.
However, if the OP has a non-DVR, there is no reason to offer the 1080P option as it can't record VOD anyway.

directv's Hi-def DVRS, for example my HR20-100 with the last firmware upgrade has a 1080p selectable option, its only on the dvrs and its only for some of the downloadable content.
