The last couple of days I have had a snowy screen appear. It goes away when I change channels. So I switched my DVI-HDMI cable to components and problem solved. A faulty DVI-HDMI cable I guess. I am with Star Choice and now I cant use the 720P resolution with components while watching SD programing as its a 4:3 display and a burn in issue. So I swithed to 480P and its fine. However the pic quality is garbage compared to DVI-HDMI......some peeps in the know say the component cables and DVI-HDMI cables there should be no diff in viewing......as of now I beg to differ. The 4:3 thing with components at 720P has me baffled......anyone?....Thanks

Totally confused, are you saying when using DVI and 720p you can stretch to get rid of the side bars and with component you can't?

I'm also confused about what you are saying.

No I couldnt stretch with DVI either at 720P and am wondering why? I was told by a techie at an electronics store to use components and use 720P for the best pic. When I switched to components and leaving the settings the same as when using the DVI-HDMI cable, the pic is terrible. Guess I will have to adjust the settings and see if that works.

Most sets won't let you stretch when passing an HD signal, most sets also have seperate image settings for each input so if you calibrated the DVI input, the component ones would need to be also. Just to be sure, you're using component (red, blue, green) and not composite (yellow) correct?

Yes they are red, blue and green mjones. Have ordered a new DVI cable from Starchoice. So 480P is the best i can recieve? I think i'm missing something here. I have a 720P TV that can only use 480P or 1080i?

Who said 480p was the best you can receive?

Like I said before, if I have the resolution set to 720P i get side bars on SD. With it set to 480P I get the stretched pic on SD. I'm not going to get up and set the resolution to 480P everytime I switch from an HD channel to an SD one.

It would be helpful if you listed the model of your TV....

Also, I've never heard of having to change the resolution ON THE TV. That sounds like something that deals with your cable box. And besides, you are supposed to get sidebars on SD programming. It is broadcast in 4:3, not 16:9 like your TV is.

Samsung HP-R4252C....i'm changing the resolution on the STB its a 505. On a plasma you dont want sidebars. Burn in occurs.

Just leave it at 720p. If you don't have an aspect ratio button on your remote (the TV's remote) which will allow you to change it (on the TV, not the box), just vary your programming between 4:3 and widescreen enough, and you shouldn't have any problem with permanent burn-in. It takes a heck of a lot of abuse to cause that with the newer plasmas these days. If you are seeing any temporary "image retention", that will go away on it's own in a short time.

Besides, I'm pretty sure the Samsung's have "automatic pixel-shifting", which is supposed to help prevent that even further.

As far as using either component or DVI/HDMI, use whichever looks best to you - as long as you keep it set at 720p.

Leaving it at 720P is not an option anymore Ramm....I got "image retention" that I thought was burn in at first. Never again. No aspect button on the TV remote. This model is about 3 or 4 years old. Whats the diff between 720P and 1080i?

You do have an aspect button the remote. It is called picture size. It may be under a lift up cover. I can not tell by looking at the user manual. You can also control the aspect ratio by going to menu on the TV remote and changing it without leaving your chair.

When I try to change picture size from the remote while its on 720P or 1080i it will not go to 16:9 on a SD channel. It will change sizes while on 480P.

Does the set have an option to set the side bars to grey? That would provide some resistance to burn in. Many SD displays are now wide screen formatted with letter boxing on a wide screen TV.

It does go to grey bars Rose.....The point is why wont it go to 16:9 on 720P? It even says it does in the manual. Oh, and I cant see a bit of difference between 480P and 720P.
