Just purchased a Panasonic 42PZ80U at hh gregg for $700. I believe this to be a really great price, but before I unbox it I wanted to check with the expert forum members here.
Here is how the deal went down. This TV is for my bedroom and, like many, I did not want to spend a huge chunk of money on a TV that is not going to see full-time duty. I had my internal price for a 42 inch 720p plasma set at $600, though sticking with a top tier brand. I was hoping to run across such a deal this holiday season. So Costco comes out with their Pan 42 720p at $629, so I thought I would try to bargain at hh gregg first (I bought a 50 Samsung this summer and they gave me a very good price). The Panasonic PX80 was on sale for $800 and the sales guy said he could do $680. So I was about to walk away when he said he could go $699 on the 42PZ80 that was marked on sale for $950. Huh? He said it had to do with the way that hh gregg balanced their sale and profit margin each week, and that they carried a large inventory of Panasonic TVs. As an example, they also had the Samsung 42 inch 400s on sale for $700 and would not come off that price. Would not come off the 42 450 720p on sale for $759 either.
This PZ80 hovers around $1000-1300 at other local stores (Sears, BB, CC). Online pricing equaled out between shipping and local taxes (though I did not recognize the cheapest online stores). The forum sponsors listed the TV very close to my local pricing.
So all this to ask: "Did I get a really good deal?" I was hoping to spend less money overall, but I think it is worth the extra $100 against my self-imposed limit. That's what I told the wife anyways...:D
