I have been reading and searching for several weeks now regarding this problem. I have a HLS5086w that won't always turn on. Sometimes it comes on first try other times it takes multiple tries. This morning for example I had to try 7 or 8 times before the set finally came on. I am not getting the 3 blinking lights that I have read about. I do sometimes hear the noise like the color wheel may be bad.
I have a Sears warranty on the set and the tech has now been here 3 times. He can only come every two weeks so it has now been almost 7 weeks since the problem started. He has replaced the lamp and what he calls the thermistor.
When I turn it on the lamp light blinks and the lamp comes on. Sometimes I hear the noise like the color wheel may be grinding for a few seconds after first turning it on. The lamp light will blink about 30 times and then after sitting for several minutes it will shut off. After going through this cycle several times the set will come on. Once it is on I have no problems with it.
Could this just be the color wheel or does anyone have any ideas what else may be causing it? I am extremely frustrated with Sears. The tech never once even opened up the back of the set until his 3rd visit. When I first had him come he walked in said the lamp was bad without even turning on the set, ordered a new lamp and left. When the lamp arrived I installed it and it did not fix the problem. I called again. The second time he tried to turn on the set verified the problem, then got on the phone with someone, said the thermistor was bad, ordered that and left. The third visit he installed the new thermistor, turned the set on once (it came right on of course), said it was fixed and left. Now the problem is getting even worse and from what the tech said his next step would be to replace the light engine. If the problem is not the light engine and just the color wheel I would just assume get off this tech merry go round and just replace the color wheel myself.
Any input would be greatly appreciated.
