Even though I have the TH-46PZ80U. I was thinking of getting the remote from the TH-50PZ850U because it has the extra DVD buttons and because of the backlighting functions. Does anyone know if it would still work for my TV... I have heard that Panasonic remotes are all model agnostic... I was thinking of getting one here:

Don't spend you money on a Panasonic remote. Just get a Harmony. :)

It will work just fine. IMO, Panasonic makes a great plasma, but their included remote controls are almost laughable on the lower end sets. Even those sets that are still priced well over a grand too.

The Harmonies are nice, but they are considerably more than the remote you found for $34.

I have the 65pz850 and my remote looks just like that one and it has no backlight. If you are planning on setting up any kind of home theater in the future I would second the recommendation for one of the Harmony remotes. The cheaper ones can be had for about twice the price of the Panasonic remote you show in your post. They work great and are easy to set up. I have an 880 and an 890. If not I'm sure you can find a universal, cheaper than the Panasonic, with a backlight. If you make sure the remote you buy can learn IR commands then you should be able to get it to perform most functions fairly easily.

You're kidding me, right derek533? Panasonic remotes are great. Much better than Samsung's crap remotes with so many buttons on them you actually have to look at it while you use it.

Not trying to start a flame war or anything, but give credit where credit is due. Panny remotes are great. Simple, intelligent layouts and solidly built. They fit in the hand nicely too.

x2 get a Harmony. Every remote that comes with TV's, BD players, etc. goes in the junk draw, because they are all junk. Don't spend a penny on a stock remote. I think you can get them as cheap as $50.00.

Another vote here for a Harmony. If you don't need the super high-end model, you can get a 550, which will do everything you will ever want it to do, for $50 at BB (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=7705469&st=harmony&type=product&id=1138086022323).

Oh I agree with the ergonomics of them and build quality compared to others. But in this day and age, to not include controls for a DVD player and have it operate at least two devices is ridiculous. If these were bargain basement sets I could understand, but when we are spending upwards of a grand or more, it's the least they could do.

I've got a 27" tube Panasonic I bought back in 98 for $400. That remote included the typical DVD controls and would control three other devices as well.

Thanks for the recommendations. I'll actually look into the harmony remotes. Basically, I'm trying to create an easy setup for my parents. Right now they just have the TV and a DVD player (with possibly plans to add a home theatre in a box setup). I thought I want to take advantage of Panasonic's Viera link solution (one remote to control all devices). Ideally, it would be great if they can just push one power button and all their devices would power on, video channel is correctly switched to and they can press play to begin.

Trying to keep things simple simple simple. Does the harmony do this well? It looks a bit intimidating for a non-video/audio-phile (macro programming, sync to pc, etc.)

I would say the most intimidating part of it is the software you use to program the remote. If you're computer savvy at all it won't be a problem, but if you're not it might be a little confusing. Once the remote is setup, using it is a piece of cake. You can program macro commands in it, which means that when you push the button for the activity "watch TV", the TV and all associated components for watching TV (cable/satellite box, TV, AV receiver, for example) will power up and switch to the proper inputs.
