I have a Toshiba 52HM84, I bought used. Of course it doesn't work. The seller did test the bulb in another 52HM84 and it works. When I turn it on, the TV powers on, have audio for about 10-15secs, then pwrs off. Then it cycles about 10 times, I can hear the color wheel spin up each time. And there are a series of clicks coming from what sounds like the tuner board, and eventually halts. The Red LED stays on, Green flashes. According to the service manual it says a lamp failure or light engine. I've also been reading that a faulty balast can cause this. Seems the common price is about $100 for this part.

I've searched the web, and found what seems to be two different ballast. 23122468 is listed for my TV model, but I've read on other forums that someone has used a 23122468P in the same model.

Can anyone tell me the differenced between these two balast's?

23122468 vs. 23122468P

I've found them listed at Ecompassparts, but they don't describe the compatible models. I also have found both at TigerDirect.

But this is where I'm confused, according to TigerDirect, the 23122468 is a direct replacement for 23122468P and vice versa. If you click on the actual product link

23122468 works for 46HM84, 46HM94, 46HM94P, 52HM84, 52HMX84, 52HM94, 52HMX94, 62HM14, 62HM15, 62HM84, 62HMX84, 62HM94, 62HMX94,

BUT

23122468P works for only two models listed, 46HM84 & 62HM94

Can anyone tell me, are these the same two parts? One's just refurbished and the other is factory new? Only reason I'm so concerned is I'm flat broke most of the time, and one is half the price.

Thanks

Edit: I just found out the difference. There is none. Apparently 23122468 is a Toshiba factory part, I guess made during that DLP model's production run. And the 23122468P is a direct replacement, made after the DLP model is discontinued, contracted by another company, but stamped with a Toshiba logo.

So all in all, same part, two different manufactuers, two different prices.

Got the new ballast installed. TV works now. However its not right. It will pwr up, get picture and audio. Works fine. But if I turn it off and turn it back on, it will not pwr up the bulb and it goes through its pwr cycle a few times. If I turn it off, leave it for a minute, turn it back on, it pwrs up the bulb and TV works fine then.

I've heard that a bulb getting ready to die can cause this, or a light engine is failing. I've also heard people with the same symptom and TV continued worked for a long time.

Anyone have similar experiences like this? If so, what did it end up being?

The two ballasts may be for different lamps. Some manufacturers change vendors in production. My guess would be that the P indicates Philips, but just a guess. I know in Samsungs, you have to go by the sticker on the set to be sure to get the correct lamp and ballast in some models.

That's what I though to, but they're identical. The original and new one "P" one are made by some company, Raydon, Raython, something like that. I'm glad the TV works now, but its weird why it pwr cycles ocassionaly when turning it off and back on.

Since its used, I don't know the hrs count on the bulb. So I may just replace the bulb soon to be safe. But for $210 total out of pocket, I'm happy with my bargain TV thus far.

I think you may have a second problem causing the intermittent start-up failures. I've had both failed bulbs and a bad ballast, but neither effected the audio as you describe in your original post. Other than the audio, the symptoms of the failing ballast were the same as you describe.

Maybe I posted that incorrectly. Its not the audio that was affected, it was the picture. No video but would have sound. Before replacing the ballast, that's all the TV would do, sound but no pic, then pwr cycle 10times and hault.

With the new ballast in, works fine. But occasionaly has problems getting the picture back. I'm gonna replace the bulb for the hell of it, and if it persist, well, maybe I'll buy a new light engine. Even with the what I've put into it thus far, the total cost would still be under $800, including a new light engine and bulb if I bought it.

Question for doctorj77, you list Ecompassparts and TigerDirect as companies that carry both ballast models, but I 'm having difficulty locating them , can you give a direct link by chance?
