View Full Version : Samsung DLP picture issues

Hi guys,
Went over to look at my parent's TV yesterday and couldn't believe what I was seeing. It is a Samsung DLP, 52" or so...I do not have the model number handy though. It seems to have a number of issues that I don't know if are related or not.

1) It has what I would swear is burn-in of pillar box side bars. Now granted they do watch most programming in 4:3, but it was my understanding that DLPs are immune to burn-in. Even more interestingly, there are darker horizontal lines within the burn-in area...maybe 10-12 of them that are about 5" or so long on each side.

2) The rest of the picture shows what looks like a hyper crazy edge-enhancement giving areas an almost illustrated look. I checked through the settings and the edge enhance options are off and the sharpness is down, but that doesn't seem to matter. Even if they were on and cranked to max, it shouldn't be able to do this. Very ugly.

Both issues show up regardless of the source or input. It's only about a year old and they really don't use it all that much...only a couple hours a day at most. Thankfully they do have a 2 year in home warranty, but I wanted to see if anyone here has seen this or has any ideas before they call the store they got it from. I like to be informed before calling the "experts" if at all possible. ;)

Thanks much,
Chris

Are they using an SD or HD source. If its SD, you need to connect some HD source and check the picture, SD can look like you describe depending on the quality of source they are using and what type of cables, HDMI? Component (red/green/blue)?. And if HD, why do they watch in 4:3. Almost everything is HD now. I don't know how they would have burn in on a DLP.

It shows up for both HD and SD sources from OTA (RF connection), Dish (S-Vid is the best they have), and DVD (component).

Of course they watch HD and widescreen DVD in 16:9, but they keep 4:3 SD stuff 4:3. They do not get much HD OTA, only a couple channels.

This is definately not normal low bitrate SD noise (which is what I also thought it was from their initial description). I've seen ugly sources and connections, and this is about 100x worse that that. It's the same from source to source, connection to connection, HD and SD.
