It seems that the remote stopped working. I've changed the batteries, but I still couldn't revive it. Any suggestions beside buying a new DVD player? (Apparently it's not worth buying a replacement remote for this model; you'd get a new set cheaper than a remote...) Thanks.

How about buying a universal remote such as the ONE FOR ALL's (http://www.oneforall-na.com/list_remotes.php?type=Products) for $10 - $20 depending on the remote, or a radio shack (slightly higher cost) and programming it to control the dvd player? this is cheaper than buying an OEM replacement HERE (http://www.remotes.com/remotes/servlet/rs?a=Search&o=c&uid=0&m=dvp+3140&uuid=12287681135180)

Thanks, Jeff. It looks that's what I have to do now. Since I'm not a tech guru and I don't need the remote for anything else besides replacing the original Philips dvp 3140 remote, which one do you recommend? I don't want to spend a lot on it (the DVD player itself had a very good price), but I don't want to replace it in a few months either. Is there a way to check that the original remote is really "dead"? Can it be "revived" somehow? :-)
Thanks for the answer ahead of time.

Universal remotes will have codes you enter to control different kinds of devices. So I'd get the cheapest one you can find that will control the functions you want out of your remote. Walmart has a RCR6473 RCA remote that's like $10 and if it doesn't work you can return it. It should control the philips.
Changing batteries is all that you can really do. Although you can press buttons and look at the emitter with a camcorder. this will show you the IR emission, so you know if it's emitting or not. If it's not emitting, then it's dead.

Best,
jeff

Thanks for the advice. I read it somewhere online that the DVP 3013's remote control is okay for the 3140. (here's the link: http://www.philips.newremotecontrol.com/catalog_item.php?catnum=996500034176) Is that really true?

It's possible. Do you already have that remote? I'd still say your cheapest and best bet is to just get the universal remote. One of the philips preset codes will work.
