I have an old Technics receiver, a new Sharp Aquos HDTV, a Motorola DVR cable box and I want to hook up a 1080P upscaling DVD player (or possibly a Blu-Ray). The old receiver does not have an HDMI slot. Do I run the HDMI cable from the the DVD player to the TV and then component cables back to the receiver? Or will this not work. I'm a real green rookie at this (obvious from my question, I'm sure). Thanks.

Run coax or optical cable from the DVD player and DVR to your receiver for audio. Connect HDMI from the DVD player and DVR to the TV for video. If your TV has speakers, you could also run the "red" and "white" audio cables from the DVR to the TV in case you don't want to use the receiver and HT speakers when watching TV. Just use the receiver for movies or something else that has surround sound.

Thanks PS. We have it all setup to always run the audio through the receiver (it's 5.1 dolby). Actually, we have a DVD player (recorder) already hooked up but it isn't hooked up with an HDMI cable. I guess it is component cables. Someone else set everything up for us so I don't really know how it is setup. Do you think I could (should?) run an HDMI cable from the DVD to the TV and leave everything else hooked up the way it is? Is it even worth it to go to HDMI?

Yes, simplest thing to do is just hook up the DVD player via HDMI to the TV. If you hook up via component to TV from the DVD player the player will not upconvert the DVDs. Plus, it's just one inexpensive cable.
