View Full Version : Dish ViP 722 DVR Problems
ashquadir 12-09-08, 08:18 AM When I push the DVR button on my remote, I receive:
Error 024
Unable to access this feature at this time.
Data not available.
Has anybody else seen this? How do you resolve it?
Or does this mean my DVR recorder is not working now?
bobby94928 12-09-08, 10:38 AM Try this: Open the door on the front right side of the 722. Press and hold the power button in for 5 seconds. The fan will kick on loudly. Let the 722 reboot itself, it will go through the 'acquiring satellite signal' steps. When you have a TV channel back, try to press the DVR button again and see if that will fix it. If it doesn't, it's time to call Dish.
ashquadir 12-09-08, 10:41 AM I've already shut down and reset the 722 several times.
No luck.
That probably means your DVR Hard Disk has failed. Call Dish and order the Dish Home Protection Plan if you do not already have it. Then call back and ask for technical assistance.

Has anyone had a problem with the vip 722 overheating? I ran my dvr for about two weeks when I suddenly lost the picture and signal connection. There was no error message, but a couple of white bars flashed on the television screen. The fan cycled on frequently and the dvr kept trying to find a signal. After unplugging the unit and letting it sit overnight, I managed to get the satellite back, but only for 1 or 2 minutes before it went out again. All I can think of is that it overheated and something burned out. Any ideas?

The fan comes on every time the 722 reboots. This does not mean that it is rebooting because it is overheating. I presume you have consulted tech support to try to determine why it is rebooting. What did they have to say about it?
baxter123 12-29-08, 11:35 PM I upgraded to the 722 just two weeks ago and I am already having a major issue. The screen went black today on both TV's. I tried to reset the receiver with no luck. I push the button for five seconds and the green power light just stays on and nothing happens. The system will not reset. A tech with a new receiver is coming in two days but this is just unexcusable to happen so soon after a new installation.
any ideas?

Did you try to unplug the unit for about a minute and then plug it back in? This will also force a reset. Remember, this is an electronic device and it can fail at any moment or right out of the box. It happens....
baxter123 12-30-08, 11:29 AM Thank you for your help. I think the unit has crashed for good. Oh well, Only 24 more hours until the tech comes out.
SillyConVal 01-01-09, 01:17 PM Is anyone else who is using a Dish 722 getting intermittent pixelation artifacts while watching the National Geographic Channel-HD? This almost always occurs at least once during any program I watch on this channel. It usually occurs just after a complete change of scene and/or in an area of the picture which is involved with motion. If the program is recorded, and I replay the affected scene, the pixelation occurs again at the same place upon replay.
Tech support at Dish claims to be unaware of the problem within their system and recommends a replacement of my 722 DVR (at my expense).
If any other Dish subscribers are having this problem, please reply.
SillyConVal,
What you are seeing is the result of overcompression. Satellite providers have a finite amount of bandwidth and at a certain point, channels get the squeeze. Dish and DirecTV both try to balance compression to provide a good picture across as many channels as possible, but sometimes the bandwidth just doesn't exist to do that. The most popular channels tend to get bandwidth (PQ) priority.
More bits are required to do maintain quality with motion (as compared to static and slow moving scenes), so that is the first thing to degrade when insufficient bandwidth is available.
