View Full Version : Toshiba XS35 - Restart title & Time Bar Problems
dhighway 12-09-08, 06:46 PM I haven't used this unit for quite a few months. Today, I was playing a show recorded on HDD and wanted to start again at the beginning. I thought I knew how, but couldn't accomplish it, so I pulled out the manual.
On p.63 of the XS35 Operations Guide, 3rd paragraph, it states "To return to the beginning of the title: During playback, press QUICK MENU button, then press Up/Dn buttons to select "Restart title", then press Enter." (Just as I had thought.)
Problem is, I don't see this option on the menu! I know I've seen it before, but now I only see these menu options:
Bit rate
Special playback mode
Disc management
DVD compatible mode
Aspect ratio (Video mode)
DVD-Video:CHP create
User record quality
SAP
Exit
Another strange thing is that the "Time Bar" that I could swear used to indicate how far you were playing into the show, now only shows zeros.
It's possible my wife or my teenager has flipped a setting somewhere but I couldn't find anything that would explain this odd behaviour.
Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!
David
mattack 12-09-08, 10:35 PM I don't know about the Zeroes, but you can also hit the one of the 'back' keys on the remote -- on my XS32 remote, it's the one just to the right of the TOP middle of the ring.. That will go back a chapter, but if you don't have chapter stops, obviously that would be the beginning.
Try hitting 'up' when the time bar is up too. The time bar can move up and down the screen, and when it's at the bottom position, the numbers are cut off IIRC.
Also, try shutting down the machine and powering it back on.
dhighway 12-09-08, 11:11 PM Thanks for the input, mattack! :)
Even though it's configured through 'setup' to write chapter marks every 5 minutes, it has never worked on HDD recordings. Anyway, I'm able to move through a show in the various ways, but it doesn't replace having the timing mark for reference.
It's not that the numbers are cut off (I know that it can be positioned off-screen) ... the numbers (when displayed) stay at zero no matter where you are in the show.
I will try to power cycle the machine, though I'm not too hopeful.
Cheers,
David

I own a Toshiba XS34 and have had the time-bar go blank on me before. No progress indicator and no chapter marks. I have no idea what causes it but a recycle (either unplug or press-hold power button down) has fixed it in the past.

I really really really think that's far too extensive. It's probably 'just' a software bug with an uninitialized variable or something. A normal sane power down/power up should fix it.
Mine's taken the "press and hold power" approach to fix the OSD issues in the past. It's really no big deal since you don't lose channels, listings or data...
mattack 12-12-08, 09:50 PM Well, my paranoia is mostly if it's recording at the time -- but I have lost data, and in fact have mentioned it before, and ran into it the other day when I had to force power down my XS32 for the first time in a long time. I lost some of the 'names' for my scheduled recordings.
My hypothesis in the past (which I still believe) is that it stores the user-specified names in RAM and only writes them to the hard drive or flash or something like that if you do a 'normal' power down. Since I had to force shut down (it was hung trying to dub to DVD-RW), it lost some but not all of my names for the timer recordings. (e.g. it named the next recording "channel 3 5:30PM" or whatever its standard naming scheme, instead of "nbc news")

An update - I did unplug my XS35 for a couple of minutes, then plugged it back in. Miraculously, this FIXED both problems!! Who knew that Microsoft programmers were writing Toshiba firmware!!!! ;)
Cheers,
David
